WELSH ROOFER KNOWS ABOUT SLATE (In memory of Meirion Thomas of Llanfihangel-yn-Gwynfa) The patience of the mountains has seeped into his bones, And bits have been cut from them, Which now he nails on homes, For slates are bits of mountains, And patience is nailed fast, And like the singing rain here, Patience is built to last. The lightness of the mountains has curled into his voice, And now he sets Slates Finely, Making and fixing choice: As: What grey bit should go where, What timber needs new life, What piece can still sit snugly, What piece can safely lie. The patience of the mountains has seeped into his bones, And bits have been cut from them, Which now he nails on homes, For slates are bits of mountains, And patience is nailed fast, And like the singing rain here, Patience is built to last. The wetness of the mountains has seeped into his blood And entered in the language of his bones, And light over the mountains Has fallen, like a flood, And now he spreads its singing over homes; And throughout the weathers, And in between the gales, He sits, And climbs, And nails. And throughout the weathers, And in between the gales, Through draping sunshine and past twisting nails, He hammers, He selects, He makes his choice: For mountains, Slate, Have given him This voice.
