Costa Del Sol in February Lynda Nash A Room With A View 1 Rio Fuengirola races a metre below the overpass; unburdens silt, mud, islands of debris into the Mediterranean. Loungers cower and canopies morph into inverted umbrellas. Trees the concierge can’t name nod like perros on a window ledge – only it’s me behind the glass, four floors up, shaking my head; watching the sea meet the river full on and pummel its face, brown fists clenched as if it too, has had enough. The river froths at the mouth and fights back. Reminder The faux marble stairs from the foyer helps me stay in the present. We don’t have faux marble at home. Interlude No English subtitles, microwave pizza, the kids are climbing the doors, and we argue about salad cream. Fill your trainers, he tells younger son. We can’t take it with us. It’s too big. I scrutinise the label like a wine connoisseur – it’s 500 grams not 500 kilo. It’s not sealed. I suggest we shroud the bottle in polythene, bury it under grubby jumpers and unworn beach robes. You’ll never get through customs. I see salad-dressing sniffer dogs snouts alert for contraband mayo or vinaigrette. You’ll embarrass yourself, he says and his complexion greys as if he is the one being searched. Loose Canons We head west to Nerja, Mijas, wait for a break in the cloud. In his anorak and sunglasses he looks comedic but I’m not laughing. On the A7 signs are intermittent and the language hard to decipher at 120 km per hour.
