To Miss America 1954 and To Roseanne and To All of the Silenced Voices my sisters
are speaking are hearing their voices are sharing their voices the screams of night-children magnificent voices my sisters have listened
 are speaking their stories
 resounding their stories
 the pain
of night-children no longer just stories the shrieking
 night-children
being heard by the nation
audiences of silence
hearing children of
 shame night-children of shame night-fathers night-uncles
tore into their voices
 destroyed their soft-flowers
 then silenced the voices
 tortured the children
then gagged the soft voices familiar deep voices came
 into their nightmares
night-children night-children
invaded your nightmares
ear-splitting deep voices came
into your nightmares
nightmares of rapists
whose voices were daddy’s
 whose voices were daddy’s night-children night-children
 who waken in rages
 who waken with voices
 who wake the nation
the sound of new choices new choices new voices we hear your loud voices
 booming voices stunning voices
your day-children voices
the sound of your hatred
the sound of your struggle
 new voices new choices
 we hear the new choices
the chorus of choices the power of voices ©2000 lisbeth west written September 21, 1991
