LIFTING BRICKS Lifting one up and turning it with the speed of a baker moving bread was a rum thing to do back then. Bricks had history we had never seen. They also housed legs that scurried across our hands and left us shaking our trouser bottoms. It was part of learning, seeing what lay under the stillness. A flick over with a stick or kick with a foot. Then the day moved and we stood watching like eagles over a field. The earth became alive, moved between our toes. The false weight of the brick was a light canopy to others allowing me to see what was felt in one hand, varied in another.
