Father Time Father Time went round the rows of houses with the crows and the cats and his stooping shoulders one of the first of the early morning men one of the last of a kind of a time back then. Old boots on seasoned routes-his treadmill- laps and loops of an old boy unable to keep still with rules and routines ringing in his bones as he threaded his way over cobblestones. A needle, tending his patch of the North steady as stitch, going back and forth a pilgrim just an old timer, him and the sun in all weathers just keeping his nose in front. Half a century of housing has blocked out the view around the mills, sandblasted back; good as new- taking over that moorland of curving beauty still, the bonds of time; the sense of duty. One timeless day the streets were quiet as a shell; time had stopped, so I heard the neighbours tell. So I sang a song to mark the spot plant a sapling where he stooped to a stop where the last grains of him dispersed like salt unto the Earth.
