The Howcroft - Bolton - Sunday 15th March 2009

Thanks to all who came to The Howcroft on Sunday. It was personally very touching for me to see how well liked my late father was. I certainly enjoyed the evening.

I particularly enjoyed the following performances:

Bill Brierly - Who wrote two pieces influenced by my dad and by my dad's poem "The Purpose". Heartfelt and warm. Bill always performs with a rhythm that carries me along. Thank you Bill.

Bill Kelly spoke emotively (both at the beginning and the end) but in particular about how my dad had helped him through a personal problem whilst chatting over a pint. I was touched. Thanks, Bill.

Darren Thomas did a great piece very close to my heart about Ordsall. The almost Jurassic image of carcasses of cars was genius (in my humble opinion). 6th November .... I've been there on the 5th and I concur!!!

Jeff O Rama was humerous as usual although he did start with a solemn and serious piece. Good to see that normal service has resumed.

Paul Blackburn did a sad piece about the death of an old lady who was so old she had outlived her family. It was heartfelt.

Gordon Zola's Mr Tambourine Man was well received and his admission to his mobile 'phone ringing during my dad's funeral was also enlightening. Thanks for your honesty!!!

A gentleman whom I met for the first time called Gus was very well received with his poem inspired by his wife who is always "Doing Things" which was simply brilliant.

Val Cook performed a poem about how equality has been a fantastic thing for women but how it may have gone too far with the loss of decorum, dignity and respect. Not sure how many agreed with her as there were only 3 women there but I certainly agreed. Bring back chivalry with equality thrown in.

Pete Crompton as usual performed with energy and vigour and finished the show. A member said to me of Pete "He's about 10 times better than anyone here" and with his high energy and very humerous performance it's easy to see why he felt that way.

It wasn't a bad turn out at The Howcroft, although the music in the adjoining room was still a tad loud during the quieter pieces. Apologies to all those who attended The Gypsy's Tent by mistake.

Another good night and thank you so much to Write Out Loud for making this event special for me in memory of my dad. I'm not sure how much was raised for Bolton Hospice but I'm sure they'll be extremely grateful.
