Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky?
He got an ice pick - made his ears bleed...

Whatever happened to those heroes?
What happened to all those heroes?
All those Shakespearo's?

Ah, the Stranglers...

Yeah - I loved the Stranglers too. Went to see them a couple of years ago in Manchester - was most disappointed. The lead singer I remembered had been replaced. The new one looked like a yob, the crowd was rough, the new music was crap. That is what you call 'life'. As Chris says, things evolve, change - not always for the better....

anyone who likes the Stranglers will do for me! and for more than'five minutes' .a very underrated group from the past-with a wide, unusual repetoire.and for izzy to like them has made my day.now for sure i know where she is coming from.needless to say,she is-not-and never will be a 'strange little girl' but a lady of the world-my world! woo-oo!

Well thank you kindly sir - finally I please someone... Yes I love groups that energise me, make me feel alive, passionionate or emotion of some kind. To do that they have to be melodic and not sound like every other. Much like poetry, I guess...

Hi Isobel - here's a link to that 'yob' singing and playing 'unplugged'.
His name is Baz Warne. Legend.

Thanks for the link Darren - it was interesting to see him perform 'unplugged' - he certainly looked less yobbish. I still think Hugh Cornwell was a better vocalist - he had a different timbre to his voice and never seemed to be straining it - he also had a certain menacing presence that went with the Punk era.... My experience at that concert was unpleasant on other scores - not just disappointed nostalgia seeking. Got horribly stampeded by a crowd of yobs that appeared from nowhere, trying to oust us at the front. They succeeded. We couldn't breathe - had to be airlifted out - it is very scary when you put one of your kids in harms way...
Sorry for hijacking the thread - life - yes - I just love it, though I wish I could get to live it a bit more...

Hi All

Sorry Darren / Isobel. Looked at your links and posts and felt you were both desperately in need of some proper music...

Dear me Winston - thanks for the clip but you've not managed to convince me...There was some interesting guitar work in there but the lyrics weren't good and there was no melody at all - very, very samey. I think I'll stick with my memories of the Stranglers and Queen - songs you can actually remember and sing in the shower, decades later...

Well Isobel... dissapointed lol

I am still singing this one decades after its release. Come to think of it so are the band!

Thanks for watching.

We could get on to a poetry in song lyrics thread again again again so lets resist.

One last try -

I'm glad you said that...as a newbie I was considering starting a 'can lyrics ever be a poem'? thread, but I suspected it may have been done to death before.

Thank's for the 'heads up' : )

Very different to the Stranglers Win but she did wear a lovely pearl necklace...
A beautiful voice and improved lyrics - but still not earth shattering stuff. I have a feeling you'll be digging out your old Carpenters albums next LOL.
No - don't start a thread on music John - or do and leave me out of it - I really don't know enough about it - just certain groups that stand out for me.

Have been following this with interest and can't hold back. It's probably going off at a tangent into 'favourite musicians' but what about the incomparable Nick Drake, the ultimate (?) doomed romantic? His stuff is on Spotify - 'Fly' is a good place to start.

'Do you curse where you come from...do you swear in the night'?

The opening guitar riff (which is utterly impossible to play) was directly responsible for my purchasing my first guitar.

I'd have 'From The Morning' 'Northern Sky' and 'One of These Things First' too, if I was allowed, but the rule is 'one going in...one in the middle and one going out, and three different artists'. It's a game we play on long car journeys. My choice has been fixed for years.

It's John Martyn's May You Never on the way out...and Tim Buckley's Dolphins in the middle...if you're interested!

Nick Drake. Wonderful. I can't listen to Northern Sky anymore since a dear friend's funeral. 'Time has told me' I love along with 'one of these things first' (nice one John) and many more.

Had a quick go at John Martyn and Tim Buckley on Spotify - definitely must take more time with them. Alexi Murdoch is a real discovery - certainly coming back to him. Cheers.

Alexi Murdoch's album 'time without consequence' is utterly lovely. Well worth a purchase. I saw John Martyn's last ever UK gig in December...he was dead a few weeks later. I first saw him in 1975. Check out this....

Well, with all due derference to those who think differently (fuck 'em) I think he was.

Life is all we have and is therefore 'perfect' in the sense that, if it could be any other way...it would be. But it's not, it's all it can be, given all the prevailing circumstances.

This is a bit of a hard 'metaphysical' concept to grasp, given all the percieved misery in the world. If it's any consollation, Schopenhauer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schopenhauer nailed it years ago and saw the true apotheosis of the human condition was to be found in the 'expressive arts'...whch, of course, is what all of us here are pursuing. Mind you...he did suggest that the secret to happiness was to give up the 'will to live', which, barmy as it sounds...makes sense when you read what he thought that that entailed.

Me? I think that the meaning of life is to be found in love, poetry and music...nothing else really matters....does it?

I LOVE LIFE because I believe that EVERYTHING IS NOTHING so that I am FREE TO SEARCH endlessly and have NO NEED TO FIND ANYTHING. The Act of Discovery, any discovery, is therefore always pure delight.

I guess you and Tommy must be into philosophy Cynthia. I prefer to see and talk about things in more concrete terms.
Are you saying that having no expectations from life, makes any experience along the way more wonderful?
Sun, 8 Nov 2009 03:45 pm
message box arrow
Isobel, that is indeed how I view life. I do not box myself in by having 'expectations'. I work very hard to be very good at whatever I am doing at any given time. My scope of interests is wide; so I am never bored. I have found that 'living' is just one continual balancing act of choices, with no place for useless regrets. I greatly respect the guidance of other minds and am always open to inspiring/breathing/living thoughts in whatever form they are expressed.

I really don't have too much time for those who think life's all subjective...no it ain't...and we really don't have to respect the opinions of others if they are clearly bollocks. Tolerate, maybe...but respect, I don't think so.

Here is a wonderful Poem by Tim Minchin which illustrates beautifully the agonies occasioned by pandering to rubbishy ill thought out ignorance that we are often expected to respect...brilliant.

Chris...that was, at last, cogently and coherently argued and I am glad we have finally found some common ground. It would appear that neither you, nor I, would argue that there are such things as facts, that there is such a thing as objective science/experience and we would agree that individual lives can only be experienced by the individual....although that leaves shallow ground for the empathic poet to try and plough.

Surely, that is the point of poetry...to describe the otherwise indescribeable....to illuminate the darkness...in, whatever way that....connects?

Goodstuff my bardic compadre.

A Day In My Life

I woke up and wrote my life story
Then downstairs to have counseling, so gory
Andrew, me, Leanne, Joanna

It was not funny, there was no piana
Paul The Drugs Worker lead the way
We were all disillusioned, be ass it may

We talked and we gradually became happy
We had to believe in ourselves, we had to be snappy
We discussed seven ways to be happy and cool

Do not be judgmental, do not be a fool
Let go if you are a guy, or a girl
If you keep it all in, you will be in a whirl

Have faith, trust yourself
Sometimes things just happen top your health
Set yourself goals, it’s for the best
Accept failure, accept success

Practice becoming a better person
As time goes on your life will not worsen
Point it out, leave it out
Relax, there is no need to shout

Think about the here and now
Accept a solemn vow
Don’t think about the past or the future
You will end up in a moral suture
