Hebden Bridge WOL 2nd December

The Hole in’t Wall again provided a room with a great atmosphere and perfect acoustics for December’s edition of the WOL open mic night.
Your comperes for the evening were Meriel Malone (ably assisted by daughter Liberty) and myself, Winston Plowes.
A small and imperfectly formed shambling of poets arrived within the customary 8 – 8.20 timeslot, ready to start at 8pm sharp? And this is what happened -

Winston – Yes, I started things off with a short haiku series / love poem including
Steve Mellor – Something a little more risqué from Mr Mellor with his ode to the clitoris (Not his title).
Emma Decent – In her usual commanding reading voice gave us visions of the not so perfect American Dream in her super-sized offering.
Dave Sim – Passionately delivered a very moving war poem.
Nuala Robinson – Came next with a short love poem.
Chris Buckley – Rather the worse for drink, kept everyone entertained with his own usual brand of wonderful nonsense verse.
Deborah Jordan – WOL regular poster let us see things through the eyes of a child in her interesting piece with dreams of flying.
Freda Davis – Who gets more impressive to me every time read her classic, My Dragon Husband, great stuff.
Jan – Local poet Jan gave us a short poem and a long explanation of the back-story. To be fair this was an interesting style of delivery and Jan was on her best form.
Winston – I closed the 1st half with my poem about my daughter, Ignition distraction.

***Interval ***

Meriel Malone – (And our youngest compere ever at WOL, Liberty) contributed a weather forecast poem.
Cayn White – Enter Sir White… Hot foot from band practice. He gave a great reading of one of his more serious ones – Microwave man followed by his reminiscences of a certain Bradford open mic night best forgotten. He then left to do another gig somewhere in a galaxy far far away.
Jan – continued to keep the ball rolling with 2 short pieces
Freda – Gave us an unusual one. A poem called Poem (About a poem!)
Chris – By this time was more pissed but wobbled his way to the front to deliver my favourite short one of his, the owl and the Astronaut.
Nuala – Gave us a new twist on the Weapons of Mass destruction debacle.
Emma – Returned with firstly a poem full of great images, the subject was dementia. (This and Jan’s first one were probably the highlights for me). And then 3 dog based Haiku.
Steve Mellor – The story of a mans life from beginning to end (Not his life however)
Therese Cosgrove– Who also by her own admission had been drinking since 2pm (Or according to Chris, whom she was with, April !). Gave a confident performance of one of her favourites ‘a poem for Lenny’
Meriel Malone – Finished up with Her classic ‘Nuclear Times’ in her own assured style.

Very popular that section of the night Freda. For those who were not there one of the raffle prizes was a possible 17th century family hairloom. A Turkish metal vase/ pot !
