Cliche ...whats the problem?

It seems to me that the introduction of Cliche into poetry is regarded by many as an 'own goal'... why is that? I love to see the clever and exploitative way every day speech is used in poems. Elitists please 'show me the light'....is that a cliche? I'm really not sure.

I think cliche is perfectly acceptable. Poets have always cannibalized other poets and cultural phenomenon. Just because we live in a world saturated with information doesn't mean, in my opinion, that everything in a poem needs to be an original expression from the poets brain. Cliche away old bean.

At the end of the day all's well that ends well and there's no rhyme or reason to it.

It depends. Mostly, cliche is lazy writing. Cliches are cliches because they are worn-out speech that no longer has any real power to it. They create almost autonomic responses in people, rather like the "Aaaagh..." response to a picture of kitten. They don't create any real feeling, just a kind of sentimental gush.

If you listen to politicians' speeches, you'll hear enough cliches to make you long for something original. They use cliches to manipulate their hearers' emotions and convince them of the truth of their convictions, but they're mostly empty and meaningless. And poems full of cliches are often the same: they don't lead to any really felt emotion, they lead only to sentimentality and shallowness.

But hey, if you want to stay shallow for the rest of your life, no-one can stop you...

I summon my Muse thus, 'Here kitty, kitty! Here kitty!' I guess we all get what we whoosh for. The unexpectorant. The astoniship. The sublet.
