Caramel

Star crossed spangled lovers on Independence Day
Secure that there's no other who can steal their heart away,
Drowning slowly in each other's eyes.

Scars within the bark of her parents' old oak tree,
Reminder of their passion for everyone to see,
Feeling whole inside each other's sighs.

Dancing by the river, walking hand in hand,
Smiling at their secrets in the day that they had planned,
Wishing time stood still, yet weeks to race.

Every day is Summer and every night is warm,
Holding strong against the bitter rage of local storm,
Blind by love against perceived disgrace.

The perfect day arrives, their wishes all but set,
Cast in hopeful dreams against blazing silhouette,
He turns to watch her waltz along the aisle.

First night alone together, clasped tight against his chest,
Her nails across his back, white hands on auburn breast,
She sees her future in his ivory smile.

Silky moonbeams tangle in her shining curly hair,
Electric goosebumped senses, so blind and unaware,
That others have their eye upon her man.

Summer turns to rain as love turns into loss,
Flames of passion dampened by flames of burning cross,
Surrounded by a ring of hooded Klan.

Sound of shattered glass and shadow of shotgun,
Hopelessly and helpless, he tells his bride to run,
As demons wearing robes come through the door.

He makes it to the garden, backed up against the fence,
Takes a wooden stake to use in self-defence,
Klansmen leader crumples to the floor.

Bloodstained grass and tyre tracks seen through the choking smoke,
Birds disturbed from slumber as forest branches broke,
They drag their kicking quarry, give no truce.

Morning sun is caged behind bars of woodland trees,
Casting grainy fingers through the silent early breeze,
Caressing hanging man upon a noose.

Four lonely years are lost in tears shed by a humble grave,
Lays down a flower and tells her boy how daddy was so brave,
Boy of caramel dries lonesome tears.

Now silver widow holds her boy as she bids him au revoir,
Pride beams from her everything as he wears the Sheriff’s star,
To bring his father justice in arrears.
