WORDSMITHS & CO.

The UK’s first live poetry talk show, featuring poets you know from the pages of books and from festival stages. A rare opportunity to witness them sharing stories, poems and opinions as they engage in no-holds-barred conversation right before your widened eyes.

After a break in April Wordsmiths & Co. returns to the Helen Martin Studio. This time, the indomitable Jo Bell will bring you poems and conversation from Deborah Tyler-Bennett, Joe Coghlan, Hannah Silva & Helen Ivory. A very special line-up to finally kick-start spring!

Deborah Tyler-Bennett‘s poems bristle with subtle and laconic style. They go beyond renderings of lives past, anecdotes told, and look instead to explore gaps in biographies, real people behind characters. In 2001 she won the Hugh MacDiarmid Trophy at the Scottish International Poetry Competition, also winning first prize in the Long Poem section in 2005 for a poem on William Hogarth (in Revudeville).

Joe Coghlan is a writer currently based in Derby, who blends the rhythms and rhyme schemes of rap with the breathing space of good story telling. A unique and intense performer, Joe is currently making a name for himself on the spoken word scene on stages across the country.

Helen Ivory won an Eric Gregory Award in 1999 and then disappeared into a field in the Norfolk countryside to look after two thousand free-range hens. When she emerged ten or so years later, she had two collections with Bloodaxe Books and had helped, with her own bare hands, to build several houses.

Hannah Silva has shown her work internationally including at the Tokyo Design Centre, Krikri International Festival of Polyphony in Belgium and Poetry Hearings in Berlin. She has performed her poetry throughout the UK at festivals including Latitude, the Edinburgh Fringe, Ledbury Festival and Stanza. Her solo show Opposition toured nationally 2011-12 and was described in a five star review by What’s on Stage as ‘radical, political, courageous’. Hannah has written for Radio 3 and regularly appears on The Verb.
