Open Mic Event

Contact: events@allographic.co.uk

So, what’s Other Voices then? It’s a simple concept really - a nice function room at the top of a pleasant pub, a stage, a microphone, a bunch of lovely people, and some words. And free snacks! Entry is a mere £5 or £3.50 for concessions and performers. Doors are at 7:30pm and the gig kicks off at 8pm.

So - come and show us what you’ve got: step up to the open mic or enjoy the talent on display (ideally both, of course!). If you’re feeling shy about the stage, there'll be chances to get scribbling for our mini-poetry competition, and we've even got poetry amanuenses at hand if you’d like your words heard...

We’ll be recording the night for future podcasts and CDs, and we’ll be showing off issue #4 of Small Word, a poetry-short-story-photography-artwork magazine of petite loveliness that we launched in Cambridge in 2011, open for contributions to issue #5 as we speak!

26th May 2013

So - come and show us what you’ve got: step up to the open mic or enjoy the talent on display (ideally both, of course!). Pretty much anything goes, as long as you respect the audience and the ethos of the night!

Our two features certainly pack a punch:

Martin Figura, most recently described in a hospital referral letter as ‘a pleasant 56 year old gentleman’, is many other things, but mostly a poet. He’s a member of the Joy of Six, with whom he’s performed from New York to Cromer since 2000.

He’s also proud to be an Apples & Snakes associate artist and they produced his show Whistle which received major Arts Council Lottery Fund Award in 2010 and was shortlisted for Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry Ted Hughes Prize for New Work in Poetry.

Justina Kehinde: the second of twins, the youngest of eight, passionate about justice and the world's social state. Jazz singer, public speaker, poetic dreamer forever on the brink of conceiving a profound idea that always seems to disappear just when the pen is removed from behind her ear.

She is the 2012 Benjamin Zephaniah Poetry Award Winner and recently released 2 youtube poetry videos on her identity as a British Nigerian and the Sex Traffiking Industry. She is one of this season's regional finalists for Hammer and Tongue Cambridge.

We’ll be recording the night for future podcasts and CDs, and we’ll be showing off the latest issue of Small Word, a poetry-short-story-photography-artwork magazine of petite loveliness that we launched in Cambridge in 2011.
