Open Mic Event

Contact: popupoetry@gmail.com

Dónall Dempsey and Jan Windle began hosting poetry, song and spoken word events at the Bar des Arts at the beginning of 2012, and after a series of twelve successful gigs we've been given the go-ahead to host 2013's Pop Up Poets regularly on the third Tuesday of each month. We normally invite three or more guests to feature, but the main thrust of the evenings is to encourage local poets and song-writers to perform in the open mic. Several of 2012's open mic performers have gone on to be offered longer spots, this year. We have a loyal group of regulars but every month we meet new poets and audience members who come back to enjoy the warm welcome they find in this stylish but intimate venue. The events are normally free. Bring your enthusiasm and your poems and songs, and join in, as performer or audience!

We're planning to publish a pamphlet of Pop Up Poets' work this year and will welcome copies of poems that are read on the nights, from which to select and edit a Pop Up Anthology at the end of the year. Each author's copyright will be maintained, of course.

Come along to theBar des Arts on 21st May to see five great guest poets.

Agnes Meadows is a published poet, editor and host of "Loose Muse", the monthly event at the Poetry Cafe for woman readers; her poems are superbly crafted and evocative of many moods, and were much appreciated by audiences who met her last year.

Graham Buchan, poet and photographer, has published several collections of his poems and had his work included in many anthologies and journals; he writes ironically and movingly on the subjects of war and human rights.

Oh Standfast, (Graham Goddard), London-based poet and comedian, is coming for a second visit, this time for a longer spot, after his brilliant floor spot at the Bar des Arts in January.

Merciful Grace (Cat Randle) presents her Quirky Poetical Jukebox, a mash-up between The Reduced Shakespeare Company and performance poetry. a mix of original steampunk poetry, old comic Victorian poets such as Edward Lear, and a comic reduced version of H.G.Well War of the Worlds.

Ceri May (appropriately named!) will be telling her Celtic stories with the aid of the felt pictures she creates. Ceri founded and hosted, together with Steev Burgess, the popular poetry night Y-Tuesday for six years, most recently at the Cross Keys in Farringdon, London.

We’ll start at 7.30pm and there are floor-spots for early arrivers (7pm onwards). As always it's free to come in and enjoy another brilliant evening of words, laughter and song, a coffee or a cup of tea, a glass of wine or a pint at the friendliest poetry evening in the most welcoming wine-bar in Guildford.
