Dónall Dempsey and Jan Windle began hosting poetry, song and spoken word events at the Bar des Arts at the beginning of 2012, and after a series of twelve successful gigs we've been given the go-ahead to host 2013's Pop Up Poets regularly on the third Tuesday of each month. We normally invite three or more guests to feature, but the main thrust of the evenings is to encourage local poets and song-writers to perform in the open mic. Several of 2012's open mic performers have gone on to be offered longer spots, this year. We have a loyal group of regulars but every month we meet new poets and audience members who come back to enjoy the warm welcome they find in this stylish but intimate venue. The events are normally free. Bring your enthusiasm and your poems and songs, and join in, as performer or audience!
We're planning to publish a pamphlet of Pop Up Poets' work this year and will welcome copies of poems that are read on the nights, from which to select and edit a Pop Up Anthology at the end of the year. Each author's copyright will be maintained, of course.

We take to the Bar des Arts stage on 15th January, for another evening of words, music and surprises. The music is provided by local a-capella singer Irene Shettle, and Lovely Wizzi Seaton, a singer-songwriter who runs a music night in Guildford with her band and will be singing solo for us at the Bar des Arts. Further surprises and wonderful poetry by Nancy Charley, John Hudson, a poet based in Scotland and Bordeau, and our lovely open mic-ers. We're also looking forward to floor-spots by comedy rapper Oh Standfast and storyteller and musician Kate Portal, from London.
Never mind the sleet and possible snow - the Bar des Arts is cosy and welcoming - come on down by 7.30 and sign up for a ten-minute spot – everyone who gets to Dónall or Jan early will have the opportunity to perform for ten minutes, not the normal five – and relax into the flow of your words!
Or simply come along and listen to the best spoken word and music acts in Guildford on the third Tuesday in January – you know you’ll love it!
