Launch: Victor Jara 'His hands were gentle'

Launch organised by Smokestack Books in conjunction with the Embassy of the Venezuelan Republic of Venzuela at its cultural centre: Bolivar Hall.

Readings from the new bi-lingual book ‘His Hands Were Gentle’ together with live Latin American music. Silvia Balducci and Vladimir Vega will be performing Victor Jara songs at the event. Poet Andy Croft will read them in English.

Chilean Embassy’s Minister Counsellor, Sr Rodrigo Espinosa will introduce the evening.

Victor Jara was one of Chile’s best known and loved singers and was married to an English dancer, Joan. He was murdered in 1974 in the bloody coup that overthrew Salvador Allende’s Popular Unity government, after soldiers had smashed his hands so that he could no longer play to his fellow prisoners.
