Open Mic Event

Just Poets offer you poetry, prose, folk song and the fun of making it up on the spot. We have rant and rhyme, monologue and dialogue, and we move from Yeats and his mythologies to Keats’ copies of everything he fancied. We listen to the poetic precision of “laughing Lenny” Cohen and to the street – speak of Tom Waits.

These sessions are good for the soul, and are always uplifting. The upstairs room has a great atmosphere and the last session turned into a beautifully intimate chat about the power of poetry, interspersed by strong examples of that power from the likes of The Rochdale Ranter, and from Clare, a sweet rapper, and from Michael and Paul and Keith, Val and Pam and Danny and Katie and Julia. Hosts, Just Poets, offer you History re-written in Robin’s parodies, and homage to songwriters like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt from Norm.

Lots of warm tributes to Lorraine Charlesworth, deceased, at the Baum tonight. It would be a good gesture in honour of her memory, to feature some of her poems with her image!?!

Another fabulous Open Mic night was held at The Baum, Toad Lane,Rochdale on Sunday 13 January. This was our second anniversary of this free event and, once again it contained anarchic stuff to bring the laughs and serious stuff to bring you almost to tears.

In fact the most poignant part of the evening was when Joe, ‘The Rochdale Ranter’, dropped his usual persona and produced a beautiful poetic tribute to the late poet and artist Danny Milne, who has sadly succumbed to cancer after a long illness.

Thirty people attended, of whom twenty six read, and from a 7.30 start, including a half time break, we were finished by 10.00, in time for a pint or two before Last Orders.

Hard to say why this is always such a good night. It could be the excellent front of house work by Just Poets, but then I would say that, wouldn’t I? There is no doubt that Norm and I do bat off each other well, but also bat off the other poets. It is a cracking atmosphere and there is a regular core of people. There is no cliquishness, as newcomers are always welcome and seem to feel at home, but there is also, and probably most important, no competitive element as everyone appreciates each other’s work.

No pressure is exerted on anyone to read, if you just want to be audience for a week then that’s fine. On the other hand, the atmosphere is such that regulars like Catherine, who has Down’s Syndrome and a speech impediment, feels happy to participate and this week Adam, a new reader who has autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, felt able to stand and read twice.

Don’t just take our word for it; it is on the second Sunday of each month and your only outlay will be to patronise the bar. So please come and be made welcome.

Hi all, just to let you know Another folk n' poetry night will be on the 15th April instead of the 8th of April to avoid a clash with Easter Sunday. Hope to see you all there. Katie
