SPEECH PAINTER – NOT THE ORIGINAL DR SEUSS
This is not a 'first' for the fabulous Speech Painter (aka Geoff Allnutt) who's been with Write Angle often. Always with new material and always a 'hit' with the audience! Noted for his 'strangely comic, deadly serious, witty and impossible to predict, poetry, he has consistently explored and expanded the boundaries of stage poetry. He's not afraid to 'push poetry over the edge'.
His career started when he was one half of a double act - 'The Speech Painters' ('88-'95). Performing with Patience Agbabi, Steve Tasane , Pink Sly and Joelle Taylor he formed 'Atomic Lip', poetry's first pop group. It was reviewed as "A welcome cure for the aural anaemia of our times" (The Independent)
At August's Write Angle, he'll be performing a set of songs with 'Radio KWG' as well as material from his new show, "Bedtime with Geoffrey", (bedtime stories for errant adults, which sees him in the role of an adult Dr Seuss) as well as from his wonderfully clever and witty book, 'Twat in a Flat'' - 'good cynical jokes'. (The Telegraph).
Speech Painter is well renowned, having performed all over the UK from poetry clubs to music and literary festivals. He's won numerous poetry slams including Glastonbury festival.
His verse play 'Walt Disney, man or mouse?' premiered at Apples & Snakes and he staged his first one man show 'Beating Time'. Following that, he was co-host / programmer for 'Pure Poetry' at the Soho Theatre, a weekly poetry cabaret show that placed page and performance poets together on the same stage.
A film poem 'This time next year' was commissioned for Channel 4. Very well reviewed byThe Telegraph.
Along with his 'fabulously fast and furious poetry, the charismatic and creative Speech Painter always wanted to sing and in 2014, finally achieved his dream. Alongside amazing guitarists/singers, Will Buchanan and Kylie Earl, he formed his first band, 'Radio KWG' where he acts as lyricist, harmonica player and backing vocalist. They have so far released two EP’s and are currently working on their third.
It's no wonder Speech Painter is so obsessed with time, (famous for his three minute' 'Everything you can buy on Ebay' and 'Everything that happened in the Twenties'). When he's not writing, performing poetry or his music, Speech Painter doubles as 'Geoff Allnut', fixer of watches and clocks at his jewellery shop, J E Allnutt & Son Ltd, in Midhurst.
He is one very versatile and loveable performer you won't forget once you've seen and heard him!
Meantime, we hope you bring your own poetry and musical instruments and join us at our Open Mic - or just come and enjoy! There'll be a voucher for two free meals at an excellent local restaurant as usual. (TBA). You just might be the lucky winner!
So, do put the date in your diary now! It's 16th August, starting 7.15 for 7.30, at Townhouse Pub/Bistro, 28 High Street, Petersfield. It'll be a fun and exciting night!
