Chemistry only began in summer 2022, but has already established itself as one of Leeds’ most exciting and popular poetry and spoken word nights, continuing a long tradition of poetry events at the Chemic Tavern in Woodhouse.

In this special event for Leeds Lit Fest, host Joe Williams welcomes multi-award-winning performance poet Dominic Berry and rising local star Kayleigh Campbell as headliners, alongside the “Box of Mystery” open mic section, which gives a range of writers, from first-timers to established published poets, their three minutes on the stage.

Each event has an optional theme based on the elements of the periodic table, and this time it’s element number 5, which is B for Boron. We’re not expecting everyone to come up with Boron poems, but if you’ve got something related to B or Boron, you might want to bring it along. Or perhaps thinking about B or Boron will inspire you to write something new.

If you want to sign up for the open mic, just ask Joe for a slot when you arrive. We’ll do our best to fit everyone in. We welcome everyone from first-timers to veteran performers, so if you want to give it a go, please do. Please stick to the time limit of three minutes (which includes any introductions and other waffle!).

Tickets can be booked in advance at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/chemistry-at-the-chemic-poetry-and-spoken-word-night-tickets-480434010057. Booking is free but we’ll be doing a pay-as-you-feel collection on the night. If you don’t feel able to pay anything, that’s fine. All donations go to the guest poets, who will also have books for sale.
