Please join us to celebrate the launch of two new books by Rachel Mann: her debut collection of poetry, A Kingdom of Love, published by Carcanet Press, and In the Bleak Midwinter: Advent and Christmas with Christina Rossetti, published by Canterbury Press, for an evening of readings, discussion and drinks, with founder and editorial director of Carcanet, Michael Schmidt. The evening is kindly co-hosted by Manchester Cathedral. Copies of the books will be available to purchase at a special launch rate, and refreshments will be on sale. Please let us know you can make it by reserving a free Eventbrite ticket https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rachel-mann-double-book-launch-carcanet-canterbury-tickets-69273542029

The title poem of Rachel Mann’s first collection sets the tone: an Anglican parish priest at work, at praise, in a world made complex by technology, having discredited the authority of myth and doubted the certain certainties of faith. David Jones provides the cover image for her book, which is vividly in touch with the contemporary world and always enriched with the language of the historical liturgy, Bible and hymnal. Michael Symmons Roberts describes it as ‘a hard-won book of wonders. Poem after poem works at the edge of what language can describe or explore - the nature of belief, the presence and absence of God, the rituals and reality of death, suffering and above all, love. It is a mesmerising debut.'

In the Bleak Midwinter explores the power of Advent and the joy of Christmas through the poetry of Christina Rossetti. Best known for her poems-turned-carols In the Bleak Midwinter and Love Came Down at Christmas, Rossetti's rich and wondrous faith provides an inspiring seasonal companion. For each day from Advent Sunday to the Epiphany, Rachel Mann selects a poem and reflects on it, drawing on Rossetti's many other writings including her devotional journals and commentary on biblical narratives. At a time when commercial pressures are at their most intense, this volume aims to lead readers to an encounter with God's time and space, to find our true identity beyond all that would limit and diminish our humanity.

Rachel Mann is an Anglican parish priest and writer. She was Poet-in-Residence at Manchester Cathedral between 2009 and 2017 and is the author of five books, including Fierce Imaginings: The Great War, Ritual, Memory and God (DLT 2017). She is Visiting Fellow in Creative Writing and English at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her poetry was anthologised in Carcanet's New Poetries VII (2018).
