An Otley Run: Book launch with Joe Williams

Join us for the launch of ‘An Otley Run’, the new book by Leeds writer Joe Williams. ‘An Otley Run’, published by Half Moon Books, is a verse novella telling the story of two groups of people as they spend their day doing the famous Otley Run pub crawl in Leeds. Joe will be reading from the book, and will talk about the inspiration behind it, the process of writing it, and his personal experience of the Otley Run.

This relaxed, informal event, at the heart of the Otley Run in Headingley, will be compered by Leeds poet Ian Harker, who will also be reading his own work, and there will be sets from our featured guests, poet Joanna Sedgwick and musician Nicky Bray.

There will also be an open mic section. Initially this will be restricted to poetry and very short prose only, with a maximum time limit of 5 minutes, but this may change on the day depending on numbers. If you’d like to sign up, just ask Ian for a slot when you arrive. First come, first served, but we’ll do our best to fit everyone in. There are no restrictions on theme, but if you have anything related to the Otley Run, we’d love to hear it.

Entry is free and there’s no need to book in advance. The pub is open all day and will be serving food, so please feel free to come earlier to enjoy a drink and some Sunday lunch. You might even see some real-life Otley Runners.

CHILDREN: Children are welcome in the event room and downstairs bar, but please be advised that there is likely to be strong language and/or adult themes during the performance.

ACCESS: The event will be held in the Oak Room. Enter through the ground floor doors and take the right-hand stairs at the end of the bar. The Oak Room is on the first floor and accessible only by stairs, but there are toilets and a bar upstairs, so hopefully you’ll only need to go up once. If you need any assistance, please let the bar staff or one of the performers know and we’ll do our best to help.

TRANSPORT: Bus numbers 1, 1A, 6, 28 and 97 go frequently from Leeds city centre and stop right outside the Original Oak. The 19, 19A, 38, 56, 91, X84 and X85 stop nearby. The nearest train station is Burley Park, approximately 10-15 minutes walk away.

PARKING: There is a small car park at the Original Oak, and free on-street parking nearby.
