You are warmly invited to the joint book launch at Blacks Club Soho for Beverley Bie Brahic and Sophia Blackwell, who will be introducing London to their new books – The Hotel Eden (Carcanet) and The Other Woman (Burning Eye Books). Also featuring brilliant performance poet and slam champion Bella Cox and taking place in one of London’s most unique venues in the heart of Soho, this event is not to be missed.

About The Hotel Eden: 'Madame Martin will throw back her shutters at eight…’ With these words Beverley Bie Brahic opens The Hotel Eden, a book about seeing the world. She moves through – Paris, the French provinces, the American west coast – in the spirit of a flâneur, going about her daily life alert to the variety and mystery of human experience: the soup kitchens, the Luxembourg Gardens and the Latin Quarter, the refugees, works of art and areas of damage. This is a book of revelatory indirections, of unexpected moons, creatures, passions, rituals and histories, of days rich in disclosures and in hints of revelation.
About Beverley: Beverley Bie Brahic is a poet, translator and occasional critic. Her collection White Sheets was a finalist for the 2012 Forward Prize; Hunting the Boar (2016) was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, and her translation, Guillaume Apollinaire, The Little Auto, won the 2013 Scott Moncrieff Prize. Other translations include Francis Ponge, Unfinished Ode to Mud, a 2009 Popescu Prize finalist, and books by Hélène Cixous, Yves Bonnefoy, Jacques Derrida and Julia Kristeva. Brahic was born in Saskatoon, Canada, grew up in Vancouver, and now lives in Paris and the San Francisco Bay Area.
About The Other Woman: In her third collection, acclaimed performance poet Sophia Blackwell explores connections, relationships and journeys, and celebrates their importance in a divided world. From Brighton, Paris and the Edinburgh Fringe to Amsterdam, Australia and outer space, The Other Woman maps women’s journeys through time and geography, exploring identities, bloodlines, buried pasts and alternative futures, ending up somewhere new and different – the country of marriage. This is a book about all kinds of otherness, and finding peace with the other woman in your own life.
About Sophia: Sophia Blackwell is a poet, author and host of Below Stairs at Blacks Club, as well as compere for the music night Society of the Golden Slippers. Her short stories have been published in the LGBT+ anthologies Boys and Girls and Men and Women, her novel After My Own Heart (2012) was published by Limehouse Books, and her poetry has been anthologised by Bloodaxe, Nine Arches and The Emma Press among others. The Other Woman is her third collection of poetry and her fourth book. She lives in North London with her wife, lots of books and some long-suffering plants.
