Brum Radio Poets presents a poetry showcase in association with the Verve Poetry Festival and Waterstones, Birmingham.

This will be a live recording of the Brum Radio Poets show, to be broadcast at the end of March and features 4 of the most exciting poets currently performing in the UK and the Midlands. The showcase brings together a nationally renowned poet, an established regional performer and two talented poets from Birmingham.

This is the second showcase event for Brum Radio Poets, so if you love performance poetry and want to see some of the very best that Birmingham has to offer, then join us at Waterstones on Thursday 1st March.

Malaika Kedoge

Growing up the most (reluctantly) ‘exotic’ girl in a quiet Devon town, Malaika Kegode cut her teeth as a poet and performer opening for bands in music venues such as Exeter Cavern and LeftBank. Since those beginnings she has gone on to work closely with organisations such as Apples and Snakes, Roundhouse and BBC 1Xtra and is a member of the Raleigh Road Collective, formed as part of 1Xtra’s Words First initiative. Malaika has performed around the country at theatres, music venues, literary events and festivals such as WOMAD and Boomtown and has supported artists such as Matt Harvey and Saul Williams. She inspires young people as a workshop facilitator. Currently living in Bristol, where she feels happily less ‘exotic’, she is creator and host of Milk Poetry, a regular thriving event in the city. Her debut collection Requite is now available from Burning Eye Books.

Steve Pottinger has gigged up and down the country, taking his irreverent, comic, and political poetry to pubs, clubs, and festivals, entertaining audiences from Penzance to St. Andrews. Expect poems on subjects from the personal right through to the global, with a wild detour via outrageous dreaming.

'Warm, questioning, and compelling. A treat of a performer.'
Buxton Spoken Words.

'In a world crowded with hype, doubt, and egoism he speaks up for humanity.'
1000 Monkeys. Guildford.

'Accessible, intelligent, funny. Book Steve.'
The Green Gathering.

Leon Priestnal is a poet currently based in Birmingham. His poetry scatters back and forth between the satirical and the personal, the observational and the introspective. He has performed his ramblings up and down the country and performed some on the spot spontaneous verse on BBC Radio. He is also host of regular Birmingham spoken word night 'Howl'.

Jess Davies is a human-being from Redditch, in the West Midlands. Jess would describe herself as a shy person who doesn’t quite understand why she keeps putting herself in front of microphones, and other people would describe her as a poet, artist, spoken word host and workshop facilitator.

Jess is the founder of Stirchley Speaks (a monthly spoken word night in Stirchley) and has featured at Howl, Grizzly Pear, Mouth Pieces, Morton Stanley Festival in her hometown Redditch – as well as supported Neil Hilborn at Birmingham’s Glee Club.

There may be adult language and adult themes expressed in the showcase, so it is up to your discretion if booking tickets for a minor.
