Scribblers ahoy!
This Sunday, 18th February, Co-op Writers York are due to be joined by Martin Potter, who currently teaches at The Centre for Lifelong Learning at York University and this term is teaching an evening course on TS Eliot.
Martin has recently launched a collection of poems, published by Eyewear Publishing, called 'In The Particular', in which he refers to his Catholicism, aspects of liturgy, religious practice and ritual, pilgrimage and sacred history, York (where he lives) and Northumberland, as well as his interest in other languages and interest and presence in places further afield, in the Middle East and in the Hispanic/Latin world.
Martin studied literature and language at the Universities of Cambridge, Southern California and University College London. He has also taught in Romania and in the Palestinian Territories (Jenin in the West Bank).
I met him through singing Latin chant at Vespers and Benediction at St Wilfrid's Church, near York Minster, which he regularly attends, which is now run by a group of Oratorian priests and brothers.
The workshop will commence at 7.30pm, after we have sung Vespers and Benediction in St Wilfrid's (6 - 7.10pm), which is next-door to the Eagle and Child pub, on High Petergate, to which you are cordially invited. We are booked into the front room, overlooking High Petergate on the top floor of the pub.
Martin's talk will draw not only on his current collection, but other works, which have been published elsewhere, for instance, in Acumen, The Cannon's Mouth and The French Literary Review.
There will be opportunity to ask Martin questions, not merely to do with his writing and interests, but on bringing work to publication.
His talk will run to about 9pm, concluding with opportunity to buy copies of his collection (£6). Members of the audience purchasing copies will be reimbursed £1 of their entrance fee, which is £2 for wage-earners, otherwise £1.
We will then take a 15 minute break and, if other writers have brought along work, they will, subject to time, have a chance to air and share their work for the remaining hour to 75 minutes of the workshop (to 10.30pm).
If anyone wants to bring along work of their own, we recommend bringing 5 or 6 copies and that the work or excerpt should not exceed 2,000 words or four sides of A4.
Look forward to seeing you Sunday evening. Please take care coming up and going down the two flights of stairs.
Adrian
