An evening of poetry and music featuring Andrew McMillan whose collection, Physical, was, the first poetry book to win the Guardian Book award, and Cumbrian singer songwriter Andy Cook. Andrew McMillan’s verse often exposes the surreal in the everyday as he turns an ear to the lilt of conversation and worries away at what it is to be human. He is a poet who looks to assess the state of modern masculinity and does so in ways that few others currently writing are either willing or able to. There are poems, too, that show McMillan’s extended gift for the comic, as in the brilliantly titled “The Fact We Almost Killed a Badger Is Incidental” or for unexpected serious reflection, as in “I.M.”, when a bereaved electrician pulls out switch boxes that suddenly look like “intricate rooms in a doll’s house”, which is as haunting as it is compassionate. Andy Cook, singer, songwriter, guitarist, has been influenced by an eclectic range of artists and genres, including post punk, new wave, folk and early blues. While his songs are melancholic at times his performing is also beautifully melodic and peppered with dark humour. And of course there will be the unpredictability of the revitalized open mic and M/C Kim Moore to complete an unforgettable Saturday evening's entertainment
