Poetry at The Room, 33 Holcombe Road, Tottenham Hale, N17 9AS (at 7.30) Grey Suit Editions Reading by Kerry-Lee Powell, Fawzi Karim, and Alan Jenkins, hosted by Anthony Howell

Kerry-Lee-Powell - Born in Montreal, she has lived in Australia, Antigua, and the United Kingdom, where she studied Medieval and Renaissance literature at Cardiff University and directed a literature promotion agency. Her work has appeared in journals and anthologies throughout the United Kingdom and North America, including The Spectator, The Boston Review, and The Virago Writing Women series. In 2013, she won The Boston Review fiction contest, The Malahat Reviews Far Horizons Award for short fiction, and the Alfred G. Bailey Prize. A chapbook entitled The Wreckage has recently been published in England by Grey Suit Editions. A novel and short fiction collection are forthcoming from HarperCollins. Inheritance is her first book.

Fawzi Karim, born in Baghdad in 1945 and now living in London, he is rapidly establishing a reputation as a major figure in contemporary poetry. Plague Lands, his first book of poems in translation (versions by Anthony Howell) was a Poetry Book Society recommendation for 2011. Anthony and Fawzi share this birthday party - born in the same year!

Alan Jenkins was born in Surrey in 1955 and has lived for most of his life in London. He studied at the University of Sussex and has worked for the Times Literary Supplement since 1981, first as poetry and fiction editor, then as deputy editor. He was also a poetry critic for The Observer and the Independent on Sunday from 1985-1990, and has taught creative writing in the USA, London and Paris. His collections of poetry are In The Hot-House (1988), Greenheart (1990), the Forward Prize-winning Harm (1994), The Drift (2000), A Shorter Life (2005) and Revenants (2013); Drunken Boats, containing his acclaimed translation of Rimbaud’s ‘Le Bateau ivre’, was published in 2007, and Blue Days (The Sailor’s Return) in 2010. A Short History of Snakes, a selected poems, was published in 2001 by Grove Press, New York.
