Pop Up Poets meet regularly to perform and read their work, hosted by Dónall Dempsey, on the third Tuesday of each month. We normally invite two or three guests to feature (20 minute sets), and the rest of the evening is devoted to the open mic (5 minute spots). We have a loyal group of regulars but every month we meet new poets and audience members who come back to enjoy the warm welcome they find in this stylish but intimate venue. The events are normally free. Bring your enthusiasm and your poems and songs, and join in, as performer or audience.
We published a book of Pop Up Poets' readers' work at the end of 2013 and we plan to publish another Pop Up Anthology at the end of 2014. We are looking for poems for this year's book to be sent to us by June 30th. Everyone who has read at the Bar in the last 12months, and all guests booked up to and including 16th December 2014 are invited to submit up to 4 poems for us to consider for inclusion. All contributors wiil keep ownership and copyright of their own poems, of course.
A full evening of talent this month, when we welcome back Paul Sutherland and David Cooke whose poems we enjoyed hearing at the Bar des Arts last year. Both have new work and recently published books to share.
We’re tempted to use that old phrase – “from the sublime to the...” but no, there’s nothing ridiculous about the songs of Paul Eccentric and Ian of the duo called Rrrants. Their zany rhyming has plenty of sense to it, however anarchically they express their messages! We last saw Rrrants on our platform in May 2012, and we know they have lots of new work to bring to Guildford.
We’re very excited and we know that May 20th is going to be a truly varied evening. Be ready to be inspired with a gamut of emotions from quiet meditation and humour to crazy fun and satire.
Dónall Dempsey will be hosting as usual and if you would like to take to the mic for 5 minutes, just arrive between 7pm and 7.30 to sign up. We start on the dot of 7:30 and finish at 10.30. See you there! (No charge for entry)
