GREG HARPER – FOURTH TIME AT WRITE ANGLE! DON'T MISS HIM!
There's a good reason why performance guitarist/singer, songwriter Greg Harper's back for the fourth time at Write Angle. He's one of our favourite guitarists with a soft gentle touch, evocative melodies and thought-provoking lyrics that will leave you still humming his music at the end of the evening.
Greg writes with great passion and an earthy honesty, about our history, aspirations, loves and lives. He combines evocative melodies with genuinely thought-provoking lyrics and was finalist in the UK Songwriting Competition.
He's performed in the US, Ireland and all around the UK, in many diverse venues ranging from folk festivals to folk clubs, pubs to parliament, theatres to farms, poetry events, castles, churches, chapels, village halls and country barns.
Born in Shoreham-by-the-Sea, Sussex, he's still very much a 'country' folk singer today! His songs have been used to promote many diverse issues, from the loss of ancient woodland by the Woodland Trust - 'All Gone - to raising awareness to the dangers of fracking with 'Cool Clear Water', to the injustice of the legal system and issues surrounding road death. The CEO of Compassion in World Farming described 'Gossamer Wings' as 'A very beautiful, poignant and haunting song', highlighting the current decline and consequential plight of bees. After reading 'The Old Ways', a beautiful, poetic book, by Robert MacFarlane, he was inspired to write 'The Broomway'. This is hailed as the 'most dangerous of bridleways in the UK', running off the Essex coast from Wakering Stairs, out across the sands.
Other songs draw on stories of historical truth, such as 'Capel-le-Ferne' and have been described as "Sheer poetry", recalling the sacrifice made by 'The Few' in the Battle of Britain (1940), written in 2010 from the perspective of a veteran attending a memorial event at Capel-le-Ferne, on the cliffs near Folkstone, Kent, while 'November Sky' highlights the tragedy of the Coventry blitz from November of that same year.
'To be able to compress the essence of a story, the emotion, the cause and effect into four and a half minutes takes a rare talent and one that Greg Harper seems to have in his soul.'(Fatea Magazine)
'Show of Hands...great songs.' (Steve Knightley),
'….reminiscent of Ralph McTell at his best.' (Roy Stannard. Seahaven FM),
'Penetratingly powerful songs with lyrics that cut hard, wide and deep'. (FolkWords),
'There is much to admire in Greg Harper's music. He is clearly a gifted poet with a skill for creating evocative imagery. His voice is in the tradition of many great English singer-songwriters, with a rich and sonorous tonality.' (R2 RocknReel Magazine),
'The true mark of penmanship' (Fatea Magazine),
'Gossamer Wings'..a very beautiful, poignant and haunting song. (Philip Lymbery. CEO Compassion In World Farming),
'Listen carefully. The words are precious.' (Chris Liddiard, White Horse Folk Club, Sussex),
"A huge success. Greg Harper won everyone's hearts. The audience loved him.'(Kieran Goss, Ireland)
'One of the goals of Radio Riel is to play and promote the work of excellent musicians. We were so pleased to be able to feature your work.'(Gabrielle Riel, Radio Riel, Detroit. USA).
Don't forget to bring your own poetry and music to perform at our Open Mic. Our evening wouldn't be as popular as it is, without you! And if you just want to come and watch, that's fine too!
Tuesday 21 March at Townhouse Pub/Bistro, 28 High Street, Petersfield. Entry: £6
