Oh - what a shame! And John Coopey's going to be there! I don't know much about the Tyldesly thing - I'll have to ask Jeff about it. I'm going to something he's doing on Saturday, so I'll see. Crumbs - it'll be December before I see you otherwise! Take care anyway - and make sure you save enough dosh to make the Christmas bash! x

Never worry about not commenting. There is so much stuff on here it can be overwhelming to comment on them all. Hope to see you tonight. x

Hi Laura, me again banging on about your latest on Poetry24. I do wish others had joined in this debate on how far poets should go with their viewpoints.

I suppose my stance had tended to side with those of Wilfred Owen namely that a poets job is to 'warn'. Your poem tended to conjur up images of anarchy & the recent riots which cost ordinary people their jobs when buildings burned down.

But hey, if you managed to get folk thinking those issues through, - then that could be where its strength lies after all.

Hi Laura, well done on getting published on Poetry24 again. I had read the poem earlier but bauked (felt uncomfortable)at the bit which appeared to condone nicking the stock.

It was a well stated piece though and brought to light the many social issues people are faced with nowadays & what is seen as the norm. People will always do what is necessary to survive of course and most of us have a story not to be shared, a handful of sweets from Woolworths perhaps as a kid learning the boundaries of life.

What did surprise me though was the lack of comment in response to your poem which merited a meaty response.

Hi Laura, 'Wisps' so glad you commented. Actually I sent that off at the same time as 'How Down at the Hyatt' to Poetry24, but they have yet to mention it.

I am mulling over the Face Book thing & will let you know. Sounds like a good plan.

Many thanks.

Humour is a difficult one - often it's the politically incorrect that makes us laugh more. When it comes to regional characteristics, I think there is sometimes a historical grain of truth that is taken and distorted out of all proportion.

For sure the Scots enjoy a wee dram - though plenty are probably tee total and spend their hours knitting aran jumpers. The Welsh are supposed to be insular - although my Auntie is welsh, now living in Brighton and the most lovely, sociable lady you could ever wish to meet. Insurance premiums do rise as you near certain cities - though you'd have to study statistics to substantiate that one ;) Perhaps the necessity to thieve comes essentially from poverty and unemployment - and in its history, Liverpool has certainly suffered plenty of that.

The Livepuglians I've met have wonderful sense of humour and rogueish natures - they normally give as good as they get. But I do take your point about stereotyping.

Your assets are intellect and humour, an unbeatable combination. The money thing can sting, but 'financially poor' is a movable goal post. What some people call 'poor' these days I regard as quite adequate for creature comforts. I admit I peer with awe through restaurant windows at the hordes of people, especially families with children, who consider dining out a life necessity. No two ways about it though, I don't support the business cycle adequately. It's a conundrum. :)

Laura, thanks for noticing that I've been a bit 'absent'. It has been a busy summer. You are really striding forward now. I must try to be a bit more 'entry active' with so many opportunities to be chosen for publication. Basically, I think I'm shy. Would you believe it! Maybe it's lazy. But I turned down one opportunity because I didn't like the script size offered. And isn't that the opposite of shy! What IS the definition of schizo? :)

Fair sex?
Put it down to my youth...brought up as the youngest (of six) by a mother born into the Edwardian age. There was a time when a man held the door for a woman, stood up when joined by a woman, gave up a seat for a woman and doffed his hat upon meeting a woman.....the oil of good manners that lubricated the wheels of society.
"Fair sex" was a merely a generic polite reference to women per se. borrowed from those days.

I sit corrected. But pardon me if I prefer not to be defined as a "long-time feminist".
From experience the fair sex don't need my help to get what they want on behalf of their
gender.

Hey, hey Laura! [there's a song in there somewhere] I used to be a big fan of Machine head [the album, not the band] but over time the blanket airplay on radio, at discos etc drove me to despise 'Smoke On The Water'. Like Paranoid, All Right Now, Stairway To Heaven, Bat Outta Hell etc I don't care if I never hear it again. As for 'Lazy' and 'Space Truckin' they were an excuse to go self-indulgent. My fave albums by Deep Purple were, and remain, 'In Rock' and 'Fireball' [love that title track, and 'Anyone's Daughter'!]

I like this because it retains much of the original message of the orig lyrics but odes its own thing too, Japanese? no reason except that the results seem to come out better with some languages than others prob because the translation is more difficult.

Hi there chuck. Your comments on 'Rhyme Wounds All Heels' were mucho appreciated and will be acted upon. 'Heel' is a [fairly old-fashioned] word for an unpleasant person; forget who said it first but 'time wounds all heels' was a neat reversal of the old adage - I simply substiuted 'rhyme' for 'time'. Perhaps it doesn't work; it sounded funny at the time tho.

Sir
It has come to our attention that a formal request has been made to 'befriend' Mr Carroll. As you are no doubt aware that Mr Carroll is a very busy man with vary many obligations and there is a constant demand to 'befriend' Mr Carroll and that leaves him little time for social engagements such as you have requested. However a small number of applicants are permitted to become 'friends' of Mr Carroll and this issue is resolved by the process of elimination. Once a month we take the names of the said applicants and put them into a hat, then Mr Carroll selects one at random and the lucky winner is then allowed to be a 'friend' of Mr Carroll. Unfortunately you have not been selected this time and therefore I must convey to you the disappointing news that you are not to be a friend on this occasion. However all is not lost as we repeat the process with all new applicants and failures such as your-self on a monthly basis but let me be clear on this matter SHOULD YOU CONTINUE TO HARASS Mr Carroll in this way then your name will not be going into the hat.

yours etc
Thomas Henry Carroll

...now that will be Janet (sister of Karen). I was a fb friend and then ditched her as she can't be bothered with it- ;o) we get on in real life famously. I also ditched Hannah TWICE! (I am very choosy)She did not respond to a poem that I sent her. She spends too much time cycling(Hannah that is). Resend your request and I will place it in the in-tray.
