People have done all sorts of things with the Gormley statues, including the famous (and actually quite artistic) nude calendar. Yellow shorts is different, but there's something new every week

Thanks for your comment Dave. I agree, the situation's not quite as bad as in some countries. However I am disquieted when we or the Americans use phrases such as '...for god and country...';

I think the relationship between the (Christian) church, the political establishment, and the arms manufacturers and the military is not a healthy one.

Hi Dave, thank you for your kind comment. I think there are many interesting and important figures that never made it to history's 'A list' but played just as significant a part in humanity's long journey to the present. i look forward to your new work, i enjoyed the Churchill poem here, do you have to read it in the style of 'we will never surrender'? Some great language too.

Ok, you win. first time I have actually edited a poem after blogging it, so there's hope for me yet. Ammended the first line of the last stanza to include hope, but I do draw the line at wiping tears away haha.

Had some real fun writing that poem, with the irregularities running through it. It sort of symbolises the irregularites and complexities not only of human nature but also of conscious thought for me.

hi Dave, thanks for your comment. Are you intrigued by maybe one day our cathartic poery may end up on someones dusty shelves or about Katharos and satanus. Did my homework on this one, was intrigued at the fact that the most famous poets - the majority of them actually write to purge their feelings. However, although I knew what catharsis meant ( be shocking if I didn't being an English teacher. haha), I assumed that it was greek and looked it up. The Internet, my Muse! The wonders of modern technology, I wonder how many more poems the most famous and legendary poets could have churned out if they had access to the internet? or on the otherhand would their poems have been so great if they had access to the internet!!

Imagine. Shakespeare, Blake, Coleridge or Yeats asking jeeves or googling in the middle of the night looking for inspiration! haha.

HI Dave, thank you for reading and posting your kind comment on my poem Shoormal. I went to a beach north of Liverpool once, near where all the red squirrells live, it was HUGE and there were winsufers and other things with wheels scooting along the sand, I can't remember the sea muddily shlurping but I was distracted by all the wind powered things...some of which were horses... nice beaches though you have down there, thanks again, Deb x

Hi - me again..... I'm only just getting round to answering all my messages and emails after a hectic month, which has included both a house move and a hospital stay - so sorry for the delays.
Afterlife.... I'm afraid my belief is that there isn't one, when you're dead - you're dead, and the only way to live on is by passing a copy of your DNA on. You don't get your rewards or punishments in any afterlife - only in this one; and those are not always commensurate with your actions or deeds.
And I count myself fortunate that I can live in a society that allows me to say that, and where someone with the completely opposite p-o-v can state their beliefs too.
Leonard Cohen - I love! I believe I've just missed him (again!) in concert over here, but I think the man is a genius. Do you know 'The Future'? - I love the bleakness of the lyrics, though there are too many of his that I love for me to say it's my favourite - just one of many. Who else do you like?

Having recently lost 2 of my favourite Scrabble partners (you know who you are, you wimps! call yourselves obsessives, humph!) if you want to find me on f/b (I'm there under my other name - Christine Neale - just follow the trail of poets) - I'll be happy to play Scrabble with you too.

Hi Dave
Thanks for reading anc commenting on 'Important' - glad you liked it.
No _ I suppose the questions don't come much bigger than why are we here? and does anything matter? but I think I'm coming at them from a different point-of-view to yours. I don't have any religious or spiritual faith or convictions - I don't believe there is any kind of afterlife where we'll receive a reward for being virtuous - I believe this is it! and precisely because this is it ... is why our actions matter. But as you point out - equally - perhaps not. I know which way I prefer to try and conduct myself - but, in the end, I don't think the world notices much!

I, too, loved the Bill Bryson Short History. And although I don't have your spiritual beliefs ..... I do always wonder ......!

Hi Dave,
Thanks for comments on "John." I'm surprised some people seemed to struggle with all the clues in there. It's a reflection on the son of a friend who enriches social gatherings so much with his warmth, enthusiasm and innocence. He's a really lovely lad and it's heartbreaking to think that in times past so many "special people" were shut off from society when they have so much to offer. But, from your response I obviously don't need to tell you this.
Regards,
A.E.
