Dave, you have posted something in the discussions section about Andrew Marvell ! Never heard of him till spent a day in Hull in a very nice square near a very nice church. Performed in the shadow of a statue all day which was of.... yes, Andrew Marvell. Looked him up since but struggle to connect with his work. Appreciate the comments on the OK Society poem- if it strikes a chord then that is good.

Of course I wish our society spent less time on tittle tattle and paid far more attention to real news stories. I wish our media had more decorum, decency and taste.

If Bertrand Russell couldn’t convince you I’m certainly not going to try. I’m not that evangelical about my atheism. In fact some of my best friends are Christians. My Dad bought me the book for Christmas many years ago, not that we celebrated Christmas. He was like the pope of atheism. I believe it had something to do with being a bomb aimer in Lancasters during the Second World War not that he talked about it much. His older brother had been a Japanese prisoner of war and became a Methodist lay preacher on his return. They would have some wonderful discussions, warm never heated. My Dad had the last word at George’s funeral when he started the eulogy with the line- I hope George is quickly coming to terms with the lack of an afterlife.......

Hi Dave - thanks for your comments. I accept that some of the stuff i may put up causes some disagreement and even consternation, but at the end of the day it's only a point of view so hopefully no-one takes it personally. I thought your comments were very balanced and respectful considering you might disagree with some of the substance of the poem.

Hi Dave - I like a lot of yours & it's very interesting about the photons & news to me. I posted a poem not-so-very-long-ago (old father time) positing my view that there really is "No Such Thing as Time". This is my firmly held belief, which, if true, might help to avoid some of the anomalies & problems which particle physics currently seems to be struggling over. just my 2 cents. all the best. B

Thanks for your thoughts on Sleep Easy. There's a row of 13 graves in St Mary's Cemetery in Hucknall where I'm from. They're the graves of Polish Airmen who inspired the poem. (So far as I know there is no Tadeus Makulski or Zigmunt Kovacs among them).

Thanks for your comments Dave, glad the bullet piece made you laugh, and I do actually agree with you on the ‘what is poetry’ question. It was my first piece up on here though and I was a little hesitant over what reaction it may get, this being a ‘poetry’ site, hence the disclaimer!

Regarding the issue over allusions, part of me would love to explain further all of the inspirations, associations and references. But there’s a bigger part of me that knows how satisfying, delightful and soothing it can be to spot allusions in other people’s lyrical and literary works. Those moments when you almost squeal with recognition, or get an empathetic bit of grit in your eye, you know? This part also likes to avoid authorial intent, and prefers to let the reader make up their own interpretations, cos I know, again, what joy there is in doing that :)

Having said that, I have regularly devoured whole auto/biographical slices of my favourite writers and singers, in an effort to gain more understanding!

I don’t think I’ll ever really make up my mind, so I’ll just incline to the not-telling for now :)

Good Afternoon David
Whilst the tricky nture of the subject can be harrowing i think I have given it a slightly different slant.
I thank you for commenting but in particular for reading. The subject matter whilst unpalatable to many has taken a different outcome and slant to that implied by many other poems of similar ilk.

The poem is a completely different in construction to my standard ‘typical’ and yes it is haunting but moreover it is a construction of woven memories and fleeting images, if I was only able to capture odours and taste and include them within this poem they to would have been included.
The description of the odour and taste would have been superfluous within this poem… a ‘you would have to have been there moment’.
