Cheers Dave, much appreciated

Kind of topical too, what with the various angles of reportage at the moment :)

Pleased you like The Scourge of God Dave.
I tried a different format with an internal (lines 1 and 3) rhyme, but unrhymed outer (2 and 4). Still with a heavy trochaic rhythm.
I do have an interest in all things historic, so I don't suppose Attila will be my last; but no set subjects as yet.
(I do find the very readable and funny An Utterly Impartial History of Britain by John O'Farrell inspirational).
Once again, thanks for commenting.

Hi Dave -- thanks for your comment on 'Back Home' .... I didn't, in fact, think too much about the structure, it just sort of fell onto the page, but I have been trying to tighten stuff up a bit before I pluck up the courage to read a few out loud ... thanks again -- very encouraging!

Thanks for commenting Dave. I read your piece on the walk with asylum seekers, you do yourself a disservice. It is important that you have used your considerable skill as a writer to write against the grain, so to speak, and give an insight into what it means to be an asylum seeker. Too many people believe the crap churned out in the tabloid press.

Dave
Thanks for your thoughts on "The Ghost of White Hart Lane". It's an old post, but it put me on for the "Ghost" theme until I did something new. (Alison has widened it to goblins and fairies etc so I've just blogged "The Fairies in the Backs" - a bit of a stretch, I know!).
I too am old enough to have seen John White but don't know if I did. I saw Spurs a couple of times in the early 60's at Forest (I'm from Nottingham originallY). He might have played.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Dave, thanks so much for your comment on Ghosts of Rivington Moor, enjoyed writing it, good to know it had the desired effect on you. It's quite fascinating in a barren way but there's a lot to it. Not been up there for a while but always like the experience, as for those new fandangled GPS things, well, yes could probably need one if weather was that bad! Hope to see you soon mate Jeff

Hello David, Re: Highway to Heaven - life changing perhaps rather than intriguing and certainly scary for those who have them - mine being at the top of Ayers Rock in Oz some years ago but it came with a free ride to hospital in a flying doctor's plane. Many thanks for your comments.

Hi Dave, many thanks & glad you liked it (zen)

In that case - if you are feeling "receptive" I posted another gem a while back, but not mine, - by a guy called David Harsent - you may know it already, but I wanted to share it with WOL community as a little nugget, but it never got a word! - Hope you like it.... for me, poetry doesn't get much better than this.

David Harsent

Red

The skim on the surface of your soup, or the cut on your plate

in the Café des Anges, juices swamping the willow-pattern skiff

as she dabs her mouth with her napkin, your blind, blind date,

leaving a smudge, lipstick-and-gore, though there’s still a worm

of gristle in the gap between her teeth.

Mood music, candlelight, wine, low voices in a world of harm,

the creature brought down, hindquarters heavy, hind legs

broken by the dogs, its head held up, eyes wide,

the tangle and drag as a gralloch knife unpegs

the bulk, all slippage and seepage, and the way she thumbs

a morsel into your mouth, or smiles your smile

back at you, lets you know that everything’s just as it seems,

then back at the small hotel, she strips off quicker than you

might have hoped, pink as a new-skinned cat, all too

eager to have you by heart. Her cry tells you nothing new.

There's memory for you! I had a sneaking feeling I had the wrong month. What about you? Have you got one game that sticks out, when everything seemed aligned, somehow? I think it's got to be when you were a kid, before you realised there were other things in life. And I don't fancy our chances at Goodison: it's just lucky the title isn't resting on it!

Thanks for comment on Ohrwurm Dave - yes, 'earworm' is a loan translation from the German ohrwurm, so an interesting word all on its own, never mind the poem itself. The poem seems to be introducing earworms all over however - I did it to myself last night and was Hawaii Five-Oing all bloody night.
