How true! But it is also my own suspicion that
if this is done regularly, our brains can enter
a make-believe phase that does not recognise
ageing in the reflected image and we see
ourselves unchanged. No wonder the concept of
the magic mirror ("Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who's the fairest of them all?") retains its power.
There is a current exhibition of extraordinary
photos to be found online - the "Young and Old"
theme where the photographer uses older
people gazing at supposedly younger reflections
in the mirror. The effect/illusion is clever
and carries in an instant a lifetime we need
not experience ourselves.
