Powerful, well constructed stuff - as expected from this particular source.
The ease with which virtue assumes its pose is always entertaining if not entirely credible in the real world. The humanity invoked ignores
the inhumanity that encourages this ongoing story of strangers in
search of...what? The fact that the great civilised lands of Europe
are used as stepping stones rather than destinations for newly
found freedom and safety is sidestepped. One might guess why
this situation is not addressed, even before considering the very
real aspects of security, health and social integration here in the UK,
a country less than half the size of France with a population that matches that of the latter. ?

spending every last penny to escape the hell of their lives and when they finally get here they find the placed populated with the same fascist, bigoted, uncaring fools that they were trying to escape from - that's life ?

It's no wonder they're starving Ian...they've spurned opportunities to attend parties all across Europe, then spent all their money on a place in an inflatable.

following your analogy:
a gatecrasher turns up at my daughter's (don't have one) wedding or wife's (have one) birthday party.
They have been used and abused - are starving - have vulnerable children and may be shot if I kick them out and send them home.
So yes - I would let them in, feed them and try to help them stay safe.
What the fuck is wrong with people who wouldn't? ????

Just want the process followed Ian :

1. Apply for entry
2. Be granted entry
3. Enter

Let's face it, would you want gatecrashers at your daughter's wedding or your wife's birthday party?

Yes, we needed that! Great poem.

Compassion and irony are a good mix, especially when the Telegraph is involved.
