Hi Tom
I loved this. I think it's amazing when you can find a place that there's not loads of in every high street too.
Plus the kind of friendly customer service reflected in this Poem always makes me want to revisit a place like this and spend time there
Rare places nowadays, but they're still in existence. Just.
Great Poem
Jon

I wonder if you run the risk of being a self-deceiver?
Remember, there's no eager thief without an eager receiver.
So, let your mind keep active - taking what it needs
To keep us receivers busy - so our mutual profit succeeds! ?

I think you exemplify the spirit of discovery both external and internal John. Of course I am in agreement but I would say that wouldn't I, considering my vocal involvement on earlier occasions. Brian has a point , but sadly a wider audience is already well served. while some attempt at least could be made to empathize with the deeper layers of meaning in the lives we live.
I like your phrase weaponize mediocrity, like a suit of armour perhaps.

Loved this poem. You can really paint a picture of your childhood that a lot of people can relate to.
Especially liked your Dad calling you and embarrassing you in front of your peers.
An excellent piece.

I enjoyed that clip Vautaw, thank you. I've played that tune many times a la Glenn Miller, but the recording was a fine piece. By the way I wrote a poem called Moonlight Serenade. I'll send it to you, but it is not a pretty piece!
Thanks for dropping by, Tom and Po.

Jennifer, you are right to honour those who died for whatever reason was valid at the time and that is indeed what most of us feel compelled to do. In a sense it is all we can do. However in the poem I wanted to bring out the sense of futility of the wasting of life and how a yearly observance of it just becomes ultimately an institutionalized response. I think anger would be more effective, instead of the subduing of emotion which often happens at crowd gatherings and indeed at church services. I may be wrong, but these are simply my feelings. I intended no disrespect.
Hi Jon, I'm glad my effort was worthwhile; it's not a subject to be taken lightly, so I gave it my best shot. Thanks.
Po, I have stuck my neck out here I know, but it is after all a site for discussion, and I have subverted that last line to introduce an element of national sensibility into it. We probably unconsciously are drawn to a sense of loss more focussed where our own kind are killed. Perhaps we are closer to understanding other cultures nowadays, and how precious is life globally. I believe there is a sort of tribal element to conceptions of The Empire which were greatly influential at the time. Are we to learn or just repeat our ghastly misconceptions of supremacy and marginalizations which result in ethnic cleansing and the like?
Thanks for your like, Jon.
I'll get my coat.

Much enjoyed this, Raj. However positive insight strikes, I think it is the most valuable gift of 'being human'.
I think 'civilization' has always had contradictions, in any part of human society from the very beginnings of 'collecting together', anywhere on the planet. Somehow, leaders and followers do emerge, leaders mostly as problem solvers, observers, thinkers and doers. And then, those who can see 'That way is better.' and willingly follow, often with much respect.
And then, the thinking, the psychic energy, the communal bonding - inter-reliance of body and mind for physical survival and acceptable societal mores. The universal need for Divinity. Our human conviction that it is there because we are unique. And the purely physical acceptance: 'Mother Earth' is not really a 'joke'.
I'll shut up!

...though to reach a wide audience it is often necessary to keep the language and the message relatively straightforward. Complex pieces can leave many behind and end up appealing only to a tiny elite. This doesn't mean that pieces have to be dumbed down...that is entirely different.

Po - know where you're coming from. But I was throwing out some
magazines after posting this - some dating back to the early 1990s
(hoarder - moi?!) - and a number contained items that remind us how
the Tories became so disdainful of the electorate's misgivings over
the EU (I do NOT consider the EU to be "Europe"), with reminders
that John Major was vilified for betraying the electorate by signing
the Maastricht Treaty without a proper mandate, whilst a certain
"Father of the House" - Ken Clarke - was telling students in Cambridge of his ambition to see us signed up to the Euro.
Years ago, I wrote to the latter expressing my own misgivings about what was being done, quoting lines from G.K. Chesterson's poem "The Secret People". The response was a card merely acknowledging my letter. Now, the poet's words are taking form. His
"Unhappy Lords" see their power wane
now that the people understand what has
been done in their name and reject it..
Here's an amusing but rather alarming example of what we were facing:.
The Lord's Prayer has 58 words
The Ten Commandments have 297 words.
The US Declaration of Independence has 310 words.
But the EC directive on the exporting of duck eggs has 28,911 words!

If we didn't even bother to turn out surely it would mean we didn't care a damn? turning out will never help the pain and sorrow of those injured, or that of families who have lost members, but it at least shows that we remember and are grateful for what they did. Or not?
