Cargoes eh? And not a quinquireme, (one of my favourite words - I well remember having it explained to me as wide-eyed kid) moidore or cheap-tin-tray in sight.

Perhaps it isn't cargo, but "baggage." Baggage frequently contains dirty laundry; some of us have washing machines, others choose to flaunt their skidmarks in the public launderette - pretending they are doing someone else's washing. Me? I think I'll go commando from now on!

Hi Cynthia,

RE Avon calling; It isn't myself i am denigrating, more the old image ( Edward Scissorhands ). I was mulling over it the other day while delivering brochures.
Ann was right with the toilet, an attempt at word play.

Re Downpour ; I really wanted to keep this short and simple but i really struggled with it for some reason. In the end i gave up and just wrote it as it came.

Kath, this is a great particular image of a universal thought. I think the poem would be really good if you coolly culled nearly one-third of the words and netted the idea more succinctly. My opinion entirely. I've heard this so often about my own work, and I think I have profitted.

Memories! My mum was an Avon lady. This is really good, a witty soliloquy, and consistently accurate in mood delivery, and tone. I'm not sure why you are denigrating yourself as 'all lipstick and no sense'; could understand the barb levelled at a second or third party Avon pedlar. But it's a powerful self-statement. I still think of Avon with admiration to be honest, and loved their products while becoming a young woman. Very clever poem, refreshing. Picky point: even Americanised, wouldn't it be 'Eau de toilette'?

Thomas, this is very emotional, brutally self-honest.I do not presume it is the writer personally. Such deceit as this seems to be is a killer if it bothers the deceit-er (so to speak); and nothing to bother about if it doesn't. 'I used to sigh away the smile inside' is really good. Perhaps the 'roadkill' stanza is just overkill. I can't think what it adds to your whole idea except unnecessary hyperbole. Other than the pangs of conscience about feeling free, I don't 'follow' what has occasioned the 'wish to die', the tragic tone. So, for me, I lose a sense of balance.
