Yes, I know the earth's core is hot (although has anyone been there to find out? Maybe Prof. Challenger). The point I was making was that EVEN at the earth's core my bones would STILL be cold as loneliness. You See? xxxx

Sympathy, Ann. Liked this. The centre of the earth is apparently hotter than the surface of the sun so you and your moles will fry I'm afraid (Sorry, just read Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything and so am full of that sort of information)

Thanks for troubling with Where Are You. Bit of an inaccessible one really. x

Like this a lot, especially 'dispel all grief with our repetitious toil.' I must say this time of year gets to me. Thank God November's out of the way. I don't know what it's like in Cornwall but if the weather continues like this, I'm going to hibernate. Bring on the moles! (They don't hibernate, do they?).

I was very impressed by this poem Ray, but decided to come back to it as I wanted to read it again. Often, I expect, this happens with longer poems, people want to give them a bit more time and sometimes we forget to come back. I did come back and now I feel bad for not commenting before. I really don't think we should ever take it personally if a poem we consider to be a good one doesn't get many comments, I really think it's down to luck, who's looking, are they in a rush, how many other poems have been put on today. I also think that, certainly speaking for myself, I don't feel qualified to do a proper critque on a poem, but it's often easier to just make a comment about a poem when the subject is one we can identify with, and we can just say "Yes" I know what you mean!" Or "Poor you - hope you feel better soon!" A thoughful more cerebral poem may appear too "clever" for some of us on here to comment on. I think you are one of the best poets on the site, for what my opinion is worth. Please carry on posting. xxxx

Thanks Dave and Isobel. I couldn't add written words cos I know if I wrote it down I would have had to make a few changes, then I would have had to re-do the audio which would have lost the whole point of the thing. It was fun to do and I might have another try at another "instant" poem one day!

I keep losing the person who's talking, but the intertwining monologues are captivating in word-magic. 'My fingers skim the bumps, childless, my cheeks flushed monthly' is a gorgeous description of ovulation without conception.'Gasping for breath, and a husband' is a superb Victorian comment, and the 'thorny Rapunzals'. The whole poem is just fabulous, Marianne.

I did mean it about Cynthia; your poem was salutary, necessary and original as the anniversary wave washes over us. A wake-up call; a shock of cold water. But of course it may been rather off-message as far as the judges were concerned. Who knows? If he'd stayed with Cynthia perhaps he would have continued to write more great songs. I always resented Yoko for apparently breaking up the band. But on the other hand she made him happy. I'm just obsessed with Lennon, and the contradictions involving art and life that he represents, and, of course, the Sixties and the associations and memories his music evokes; his 'cheek' that was really anger; always have been, always will be.

Thanks for your lovely comment Dave.
We went into IKEA in Ashton under Lyne and it was exactly the same as your poem. Horrors, and also we only just got to the exit in time to purchase the ruddy bookcase we went in for. Nearly had to run for it. Not too far from Blackburn to Sowerby Bridge you know. Fancy coming to the Puzzle Hall some time? Not, perhaps, in the snow.

Just to clarify, I'm the first one to defend giving no explanation. I hate being asked myself, as to give an authorial meaning only serves to close off avenues of pleasure and thought. I find Marianne's work incredibly dense and fragmentary, to the point where it feels like a collage to me. By this, I do not mean to imply any negativity, or indeed whine for an explanation :)

Strictly speaking...err, not quite.
I think the syllable count should be
one
One
Two
Three
Five
Eight
Thirteen....etc. although some folks would do without the first 'one'. Each number is the suim of the previous two numbers so I think you have snuck in an extra line.

Very nice though.

:)

Strangely enough, hanging someone for murder doesn't outrage me as much as other things that go on in these countries. The problem is that you can't guarantee fair trials or convictions over there - it looks like there was plenty of doubt over whether she actually did it.
I think it is great that you wrote about it Dave - violation of human rights should always be trumpeted in any way we can.

We absolutely loved OZ - both the cities and the countryside. A bit pricey, though, given the strength of the Ozzie dollar against poor pathetic sterling! Still, I'd rather bask in 30+ degrees of heat in Brisbane than be snowbound here in Grimsby. Maybe that's why they all seem pretty cheerful over there, whereas here it's all moans and groans and feeling sorry for ourselves!

Hi Dave - it looks like you are on a space binge at the moment :)
Thought I'd better point out that it is Senryu - not Kuryu - or whatever it was that I made up. I was just being silly by imagining what we could call a cross between the Haiku and Senryu forms. Apparently Haiku is to do with nature and Senryu more to do with emotions. I didn't realise that till Steve Black pointed it out. x

Lovely words. That is quite a rare talent to be able to spontaneously generate a poem in that way. I dread to think what I would come up with. It is very descriptive, nicely paced and gives the listener time to reflect on the words.
