we all need a private place to retire to/hide in at some time or other. 8 or 80 years old this captures that feeling.Well done.

Thank you for your observations and comments, i appreciate the feedback.
Alan, I read some Eliot some years ago but not the Four Quartets I'll take a look now though.
Ann, the image you mention of the footsteps leading in opposite directions is a lovely idea. I'll check it out if you've posted it.
Thank you John, i do strive to make my poems seem as unforced as possible which sometimes means months spent knocking them into shape. My problem is i can never leave anything alone and always go back to poems and tweek them; obsessive i know, but for some reason it's very important to me. Thanks again, comments like yours, and others, make me happy.
Andy, thanks for commenting and please do come to a Mouthin' Off gig. The next one's on Sunday May 6th. If you ever want an open-mic slot please let me know.

Our first open mic was a great success, with over 20 people attending. Feedback included "Lovely evening - thoroughly enjoyed all the poetry", "Such a lovely evening with many wonderful words", "Excellent start", "Great!" and "I'll join in next time!".
Suggestions for frequency were mostly for bimonthly, with some preferring quarterly.
We plan to hold the next one on Thurs 21st June.

thanks win for the comment over the 30 poems thing.. so far - it's proven fairly straight-forward although some are better than others which i guess is to be expected.. if i can get maybe 6 or 7 which are workable into something better from it - i'll be happy.
see how i go of course

There was no molly-coddling just cod liver oil.
No second hearing, just a clip round the ear.
No central heating, just smokey old coal
That yer dad used to fetch in every New Year
No need to sort rubbish into multi-hued bins
The rag and bone cart used to pile it all in
Hand-me-down clothes were often the rule
And nobody took you by car to yer school.
Mecchano,scalextric or Hornby for trains
Life was an innocent pageant of games.
I'm a survivor. XX

hi Ann, What a lovely idea and subject. Cozy
Some people seek comfort in the freedom of wide open spaces. Other in being snuggled up in a small space. I think that these opposite instincts may be with us from birth and unchangeable. Living on a canal boat, guess which camp I fall into?

Ha ha! This reminds me of being a young lad and building tree houses. We always assumed that nobody knew w were up there, invisible, secret. I'm sure we weren't.
I liked the solitary feel of this Ann. Verse three is somewhat out of balance I feel, but a lovely piece. Hope you're well by the way? Regards, Graham

Alanna,Some lovely images but you're not pushing your talent to the very edge. Could you intercut each stanza with the voice of Eleanor Ida? It would make the poem stronger and give it more dimension if we heard HER voice, even if it's only as metaphor.
After the first stanza indent a stanza with her voice. This will bring the distance between their voices closer together. Each is aware of the others presence, yet their separation still continues, as it always will. You have a real skill for editing. Superb!

Andy - I'm really enjoying your poems. As to where to comment back to comments made, the poet often writes the comment on the same page as the poem cos other people might like to see what they've said, but you could also cut and paste it to the profile page of the individual person who commented, otherwise they might miss it. Hope that helps!

I enjoyed these poems too. I was particularly taken with "Toast". I like it when a small experience links you into something bigger. I wrote a poem a while ago about muissing my son who'd just been staying with me, and the image that brought the feeling into words for me was when I was walking home up a muddy footpath after seeing him off on the bus, I recognised our footprints going in the opposite direction together. Blah blah blah - sorry but it's how your poem made me remember that.
