Thank you Yvonne. I did wonder if my cold face would sound better than what I ended up with, but hey ho, had some fun with it anyway. XX

I like the way this poem progresses from feeling sorry to a feisty rally in the last two lines. This is a good rounded sonnet. I feel that some of the words had to be manipulated a little but it does not marr the enjoyment. We'll be looking for more now! XX

Good work, Lynn! Did you find writing it took you somewhere you didn't expect to go? I used to find that with the odd sonnet I tried.

Full credit should be given to the dynamic partnership of Jan Windle and Donall Dempsey, who have established this regular poetry event at Guildford’s Bar des Arts, opposite the Yvonne Arnaud theatre. The Bar’s intimate atmosphere was the perfect setting for April’s theme of L’Amour Fou!, and Jan’s somewhat misleadingly titled I’ve Been a True and Faithful Wife, first-rate compere Donall’s frank exposure of the problem of containing one’s excitement beneath a kilt, and guest star Mel Jones’ rollicking and gloriously filthy verses, and wonderful jazz voice. Open mic highlights included Antosh Wojcik’s meticulously related First Date, and the rhyming of species and faeces, Eddie Chauncy’s tender observation of parental affection, and Donall’s determined encouragement of second- and first-time poets Emma Stradling and Amanda Briggs, which was rewarded by some great work. Make a note in your diary for the next Bar des Arts night on 1 May, when the Antipoet and Will Hames will be in attendance.

Hi Cynthia, I'm relieved that it was recognisable as a sonnet! Many thanks for the relief your comments have caused me! I tried from memory to get the rhyme sequence right and to manage the twist in tone after line 8 and get the blooming meter right, and I think got closer than I normally do. It's come about in an odd way, created as part of correspondence on a forum where randomly I and a total stranger are carrying out a conversation purely in poem form. It's really pushing me to try to express what I mean and also frustrating when I can't force a poem in a direction I want but all in all a really fantastic experience.

I'm Smiles again ... well, because I guess I never really stopped!!!

Don't worry Harry, i've no intention of ceasing posting but input from others unavoidably causes one to reflect. I didn't mean to come across as overly sensitive.

I understand your 'four line' idea now. I'll take a look at it.

Thanks again Harry. There'll be a fresh post soon

Andy,For pete`s sake all three poems are excellent!

You are right about TOAST not `having anyone on`.(I think I just got a bit sentimental remembering Anne`s `SON GOES` instead of reading your poem as it is written).

In THE SPELL the first line and the wry way you change your mind absolves it of any accusation of trying to be a `passionate `poem. But on its own terms it`s as good as any...On no account
remove it.

The four line thing was just me messing about.
for instance the first two lines would read (straight across)

As vaunted independence boasts of self- sustaining charms

and so on, reducing it to a four liner.

I just like rolling lines.

Keep blogging, they`re fine.

Harry.

Adroitly taking on the "virtual world", this
poem neatly sums up the "for" and "against" of
its appeal and its risks. I like the line "But
virtual love brings real tears" - a neat
warning: saying "watch out...it's not just about playing with an electric gadget".

this is really well written without any gloss or hyped sentiment. its very real in a flat emotionless way which is how it is, its a gift to ba able to tell the facts that way. and as stella indicated the missed hug is all the stronger for that.

id like to read more,

ps. my 3 rings was about the days of trying to escape the junkie however i was so incredibly barking mad myself with my own peculiar conconctions and lack of sleep etc...junkies were about the only section of society to entertain me. those friends were the most forgiving people ive known. because they knew they were considered the lowest no doubt but i have been forgiven outrages by junkie friends. the society i live in now wont let me fart without knowing about it. we are none of us perfect x

oo really like this.

i liked to think that in the ending the subject becomes a shapeshifting serpent

passing through the overgrowth of lifes phases to the underbelly of a form that seeks to destroy with stealth. a snakey hiss in a kiss, wave caress revenges on still living lovers x

some great earthy descriptions which i love, naturally x

still appreciating your talent x

Hi Alison. Nice poem. "the precise deft unfolding of every pale green leaf." was a stand out line for me but enjoyed the positivity of the whole, You have not converted me as I believe anyway. lol.

Hey, Chris Hoy did an incredible swoop in the Keirin don't you think and as for the rising star that is Ms Trott, she gave everything and was rewarded.

Love this - am in the room with you and him. This is massively evocative. I spent my youth with people like him. But I moved on and they didn't. Full of pathos, tolerance, understanding, and the sadness you feel when YOU know what the score is, and they don't.

Great poem

I enjoyed the winning poem and didn't see it as inaccessible - just very subtle.

They were all great poems - as you'd expect. Like Cynthia says, there's no judging 1st 2nd 3rd really - it's all subjective and often down to luck.

Prose poetry seems very much flavour of the day though. I doubt you'd stand any chance of winning if you submitted a rhyming one. The Death of Rhyme - good title for a discussion thread?
