I do agree, there are many lovely lines here, creating intense imagery to support many intricate thoughts. I have not yet decided whether some of the 'interesting' spelling is wholly intended to extend layers of meaning as in 'taught'. I do get 'coarse obstacle' (very sharp).
IMO, this work does not read quickly but must be savoured through each expression.

I have 'studied' the philosophers so named entirely on my own, and also have ploughed through various 'proofs of God' with great interest. I have many philosophy books on my shelf, chiefly garnered from university 're-cyle stalls' and general second-hand book shops. Never having been 'organized for regurgitation' in a test situation, I have mainly a 'feeling' of these ideas, but an overview which has greatly enriched my thinking.
I have 'The Age of Belief' (The Medieval Philosophers) by Anne Fremantle right at my elbow, and a 1936 volume called 'The Testament of Man', a collection of works from very Ancient Times in All Cultures, many early ones from rocks and reeds. It is the commonality that blows my mind.
It's really fab to even broach such a subject as this without encountering a pained expression from the other person - I'm assuming.

This made me remember collecting cobwebs with bent twigs on the way to school in Sept/October, when I was about six or seven. I hadn't thought about that in years. Some beautiful lines here, Cathy. Thanks for posting.

Hi JC - the American obsession with lawyers - that love/hate relationship they seem to have -was the inspiration. That made it fun to write.
PF - sorry...can't help with the lyric line you mention but it has the sound of a song by the late George Jones (or someone of his era).
A famous song of his - as I recall - was "He Stopped Loving Her Today". The line you quote has that kind of feel to it.

Willie Nelson would be happy to have written this one, MC. Particularly like the juxtapos of the lawyers letters and the girlfriends.

I'm having it.
Some great lines:
Fire on their tongues/tails to their sentences
And I asked the devil if he belonged and his scowl was deteriorating
I might not have finished with 'and'
Maybe
And his voice was angels
But it's not my poem.
I liked ;-)

An entertaining and informative view of an
unusual pairing of public and private interests
here in the heart of the capital.
I'm not sure that poetry is suited to being
bawled out over the heads of a crowd. In my view it is a medium that needs careful and
considered appreciation - far removed from
the amplifications of public speaking. The
concept might just work in a very limited environment (hall/room) but I for one wouldn't
want to spend time with it anywhere else.
It's good that there are differing opinions
about poetry and what works (or not) - but it
often comes down to poets writing for poets
from what I can see. It is almost
miraculous that a national newspaper like the
Daily Express promotes popular verse on topics
of interest by its skilled in-house writer -
and was also responsible for the three volumes
of "Forgotten Verse": invaluable collections
of yesteryear's poems. By all means, let's be
new but not forget the lessons and the
disciplines of the past that provide the
signposts to success and longevity. Poetry
should reach across the ages but that doesn't mean it has to be shouted to be heard and
appreciated.

Food for thought here Cynthia in more ways than one. Yes, saw that programme, beneficial bacteria and all that. After all, koala bear cubs eat mum's poo in order to ingest the right digestive bugs and enzymes to get them kick-started. Liked the way you went with the flow and enjoyed the sheer pleasure of writing. Your work always draws the eye. P.x

The emotion in this poem is stunning. I really had a sense of buildup with each "Tiger" you had faced. Surprisingly enough, you've made it that far up the mountain with only some melancholy and two broken ankles. Well done!

There's a lot to agree with in this. I was brought up in a cold house with no central heating and plenty of germs ;) - I now have the constitution of an ox - a good healthy diet with plenty of home made food - I think that's the key to good health - if you have that you can deal with most things.

There's a lot to be said for contentment and appreciating just what you have as much as being aware of what you haven't.
This is a very enjoyable piece Cynthia. I like its simple affirmations and the fairy tale style of it - it reads a bit like a fable.

Everything, I think: God, creation, first causes, cause and effect, infinite regression, Thomas Aquinas, Anselm and all those medieval philosphers with their 'proofs' for the existence of God. Not saying, that anyone else wouldn't be obsessed with all that stuff too, but I think I had a pretty theological education like James Joyce.

Very apt in an age that obsesses about "health

The title also buzzes around my own mind as I
recall the evil character so memorably played
by Laurence Olivier in the film "Marathon Man"
- repeating those words to poor Dustin Hoffman as he drilled his teeth!
