By the way, Larkin's poem about the falseness of advertising is called 'Essential Beauty':

In frames as large as rooms that face all ways
And block the ends of streets with giant loaves,
Screen graves with custard, cover slums with praise
Of motor-oil and cuts of salmon, shine
Perpetually these sharply-pictured groves
Of how life should be. High above the gutter
A silver knife sinks into golden butter,
A glass of milk stands in a meadow, and
Well-balanced families, in fine
Midsummer weather, owe their smiles, their cars,
Even their youth, to that small cube each hand
Stretches towards. These, and the deep armchairs
Aligned to cups at bedtime, radiant bars
(Gas or electric), quarter-profile cats
By slippers on warm mats,
Reflect none of the rained-on streets and squares

They dominate outdoors. Rather, they rise
Serenely to proclaim pure crust, pure foam,
Pure coldness to our live imperfect eyes
That stare beyond this world, where nothing's made
As new or washed quite clean, seeking the home
All such inhabit. There, dark raftered pubs
Are filled with white-clothed ones from tennis-clubs,
And the boy puking his heart out in the Gents
Just missed them, as the pensioner paid
A halfpenny more for Granny Graveclothes' Tea
To taste old age, and dying smokers sense
Walking towards them through some dappled park
As if on water that unfocused she
No match lit up, nor drag ever brought near,
Who now stands newly clear,
Smiling, and recognising, and going dark.

Mally sure did give me a great laugh. I believe he could be a former instructor of mine from college..much too smart and much too little time for physical affectation.

your piece is a neat little reminder that we each have our part to play..

Hi everyone! Just to send apologies as I won't be at WOL this evening - so much going on, I really do need a rest tonight! Also Maggie asked me to send her apologies, too, as she isn't too well at the moment...
Have a great evening!
Love and blessings from Dorinda x

Andy,
As neat an embargoing piece of exact end-rhyming as you would see in a lifetime!

(But what`s that `respectfully` doing in there?)

It`s great the way rhyme punches the repugnance home.

One of the most satisfying things about being involved with the WOL site is seeing young poets developing their styles and improving piece by piece to eventually produce thought-provoking, clever work.

I'm really pleased to see Alexandra's work put in the spotlight for a week and I hope it results in her growing further as a serious young poet.

Well done, enjoy your week.

Wonderfully playful but with a message attached Andy ! I can hardly believe that a brewery would align themselves with this touchy issue nor any other large corporation, but then again didn't Cameron authorize massive funding for house to house remain bumf? Where will it all end. As for Wetherspoons they do definitely pull out the cheapo card.

Regards Ray

This is wonderful and grotesque in a sense because of the implication that money talks. It feels like worship instead of love, a circle of ego serving.
Just for the record, I owned a pair of Raybans (got cheap by a friend with contacts in the trade) and I experienced no spin - offs!

Really excellent stuff. Ray
