Hi Suki. Praise indeed for that comparison, thanks. The Fender Rhodes soldiers on - I bought one in 1975 for £700 ; it was the sound of the 70s, and also the Wurlitzer. Those keyboards were pre digital of course. The smell of the new ones was ecstasy.

This reminds me somewhat of John Cooper Clarke's poetry, particularly the rhythm in the first three verses.

Thanks gents...comments and observations always appreciated: especially from those whose own WOL
contributions are so enjoyable.
Last evening had me watching a TV
programme about the range of wildlife
established in London...with a startling shot of a pelican
greedily gobbling up
a LIVE pigeon in a park...to an audible human groan of "Oh my God".

I made several attempts at ghazals in my early days on WOL. All failed miserably, under the patient eye of our then-resident ghazal expert, Mr Winston Plowes ?

I just picked up a book--The Book of J. I've only just begun, but it does contest the authorship of the Torah. And even the nature of the god of Judaism (Yahwists vs. Elohists).

Believe me, I'm not anxious to go in amongst the religious to attempt to shake their faith. I take what I hear with a grain of salt because I know that some distort facts to fit their own agendas. But, that which is true cannot be defeated by argument. It always remains true no matter the fleeting opinions of populace or the situation of the times.

No matter the origins of their god, Israel has survived through countless exiles and humiliations and much worse...Israel persists with the promise of their god through centuries. And they've kept ancient traditions, dutifully, if not with exuberance, through unspeakable resistance. That, in itself, says quite a lot to me.

Without reference to Judaism, I hear that the ancient Egyptians experienced their own rejection of polytheism and moved their capital as a result of it (see Amarna).

Anyhow, it's an ongoing discussion...thank you kindly for bringing it up. It's really very refreshing to contemplate such ideas.

I thinking about the podcast, "Literature and History" (which is on iTunes, and I highly recommend). In it, the pod-castor talks about how Mesopotamia, and its literature are the true root to many of the passages of our modern religions. He talks about how the socioeconomic state of Jews (before their constructed identity) may have led to resentment of the many gods of the the Mesopotamian peoples that may have led to the rejection of it polytheistic nature. The "Old Testament" has a God that does not seem like an all knowing, omnipotent being. Rather, he is much like the gods of ancient Mesopotamia; many of the stories in the bible are basically versions of their myths. I think of this and think about this poem's lament for loss of ancient knowledge. Its relevance, and power even over the psyche of people today is among the most fascinating things I've learned about. This poem directs my mind to a scary future in which our modern knowledge will someday be lost. I have much more to say, but I'll end here. Love the poem.

You know, the mind is an odd thing. I recently heard (through a post here on WoL) of someone who referred to Hitler as a house painter. Read some time on the "Red House Report" or maybe about the gas chambers--"the little red house" or the "little white house" at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

ps
Sellers' comedy was brilliant. It seems to me that comedy isn't only meant to make people laugh--it should also make them examine the world around them a little more closely. Though, it's likely that those who would've benefited most from understanding it simply couldn't understand it.

Thank you so much Andy, LCPTB, Trevor and David for such positive, eloquent feedback! This is only the second piece I've posted, having hesitated for so many years to show my work.
Andy, I'm so pleased you liked the construction and will keep in mind what you say about a sequence.
LCPTB, you are right, I was trying to depict frustration....of short- and long-term longing.
Trevor - yes, exactly, the pressure of time passing...In my mind I perceived the wait to become synonymous with weight.
David, great DT quote and thoughtful words about being mindful and making the most of it all!
Thanks again, you have encouraged me more than you might realise! Paul

I home-schooled my son for a short stint after I found that the public school he was attending was assigning work fit for a pre-schooler to my eleven-year-old. I remember going over wave compression and other properties of sound and was so well-pleased at how quickly he picked up on the ideas.

Just an aside, I studied Classical Mathematics for a few years before I found out how much it can change the wiring of a brain. My Calc III final was a take-home exam. I remember finishing all but one problem in a couple of hours--a triple integral. I spent the remainder of the weekend sleepless trying to work it out and had to give up when the deadline rolled around.

I handed my test over to the professor along with about 20 pages of notes, drawings and all, and had to ask him how to derive the answer. He said that there is none and that mathematicians can't even find a symbol for it. I was speechless and simply walked away without another word. I didn't even bother to find out what he had to say about my exam.

Anyhow, I still like to fiddle around with it a little but, really, it's entirely another world when you dive in.

I'm not so sure that we have to indulge in too much self-flagellation about the state of the world. If each of
us (and ALL of us) restricted our kindness to good will to
all men, starting with those we know (who should do likewise - and so on), then the eventual result and effect would reach those in need to their advantage and
benefit in a giant ongoing global domino effect.
Fanciful? Perhaps. But surely, no more than thinking that
individually we have to bear guilt for something far beyond
our personal ability to effect change. Let us each
contribute something, however small, to make someone's
life better. Spread the word!!

Hi Andy, thanks for your comment. Long Gone, I suppose, reflects the Joni Mitchell line "you don't know what you've got 'til its gone" and is about being mindful, not deluding ourselves or taking life for granted. By the way, I'm so impressed by the quality of the poetry on here, and I really enjoyed reading the poems you have posted. Cheers, Paul
