I have to say Fred, I adore this piece. Your writing truly is a thing of beauty, and your talent is undeniable.

I specifically enjoy how alongside the air of romance flowing through this poem, there is also an undertone of suspense. It keeps the reader wanting more, wondering, as if it were the beginning of a novel or the like.

The repitition within the last few lines, when read aloud, sound almost as if one were falling into a dream-like state. Which to me is a wonderful thing, as it beautifully portrays the notion of finding a person's eyes so captivating that one finds themself "lost in" them.

Apologies for the long comment, I felt compelled to divulge my appreciation for your writing.
Your words are astounding.

Thank you Fred for yet another uplifting comment.

I too, have always found eyes to be a thing of mystery and wonder.

I feel that each person's aura, if you will, or personality to use more basic terms, shines through their eyes.

I believe that one can truly understand another just by looking into their eyes for even a moment.

I was debating whether or not to extend this piece of writing, but I felt that keeping it short just made sense.

I also felt that the descriptive nature of it allowed for individual interpretation. In the sense that, I'm sure any person who is to read these words, can think of a special person in their life to which they can relate them.

PS. I shall be sure to have a read of some of your writing, keep an eye out for my name amongst the comments :)

Great this, I was waiting for more but the poem says a lot as it is. It’s all so true, I actually seem to have a knack for ‘reading eyes’. Eyes can show pain, love, sadness, depression, interest and much much more Kayleigh. Well done and thank you for your descriptive yet sensitive work.

Beautiful poetry, stunning, so rich in detail.
I could see the photos of the mum and dad, smell the long ago perfumes.
The history of a family in a piece of furniture.
So deserving of POTW.

Dude, that was lovely. I have to admit I haven't read much of your work but I will be doing, going forward. Theres so much on this site and I have so very little time. I have 'go-to' poets that I tend to go straight to. I really liked this poem, so I'll add you to my favorites and read some more.
I have to admit my own childhood was nothing like that, and I didn't really 'do' school, but I was very happy. I think i'd like to try and write about it soon.
Thanks. Beno.

Also, the thought of said Mary twain in two like a baked item is a deliciously wicked thought.

Congratulations on POTW Jon and thanks for taking the time to respond to the Q&A's, a feature which many of us look forward to reading each week. It doesn't take much time and effort for members to acknowledge and reciprocate the likes, comments and accolades left for them so it is good to see you have broken the silence of the previous two weeks!

And this is such a good poem, one which I very much enjoyed reading earlier in the week. All the best. Colin.

The connection between human life, its hope and belief,
and harsh reality is poignantly portrayed in these short
lines. This has many forms and the shoes here have
a comforting "history" with the items placed with the
departed across the borders of faith and country.

"Good will" - an expression that describes the obvious way
of relating to our fellows and the best way of preventing
conflict in all its forms. We should all be working towards
its priority in our dealings with each other.

I'm so pleased you got this POTW Jon especially being that you're so receptive and open minded on here. This poem must have hit a nerve with lots of us. It is very hard to separate ourselves from treasured furniture at the end of a life, and to watch especially as men in vans tacitly cart them off. Heartbreaking stuff.

Very atmospheric with splendid imagery. It deserves multiple readings.

I can't be sure whether you like or dislike suggestions or corrections. But, I'll risk it, just because it's so good. And it's 'page poetry'. I think you want 'mantle', a 'covering', as opposed to a 'mantel' over a fireplace. But I could be wrong. It's the closeness of 'blanket' that made me feel you might just have chosen the wrong spelling. I've tried to put both ideas into your particular line and also the general content.

If I'm wrong, be cross with me by all means, and set me straight.
