Thank you for your observations and kind comments. I like to write about things that are either dear to me or cause me some concern. Heritage is especially important to me. So is nature. Continually treasured buildings, structures and landscapes are destroyed without consideration or sentiment. I was recently in Barcelona and pleased to see that the old bullring (Las Arenas) has been preserved and given a more suitable identity. As bullfighting became increasingly more of a concern, this architectural masterpiece could have been lost... but now it provides leisure activities, performance venues, shopping, restaurants and much more. You also get a wonderful panoramic view of the city from the roof. So with a little imagination.........

kinda like these to-the-point short poems - like mini boxing bouts or spoken-to-camera narratives in old movies. Sort of film noir(ish). You're definitely not broken if you can write poetry and post it online! Col.

I think of the Euston Arch and its vandals - many gasometers too; and these quite graceful impressive structures have been coming down in many places recently - an apparent embarrassment to local authorities. Homes will spring up like toadstools in place of oaks of course.

Nice piece of writing J.R.

brilliant imagery. i love the mental pictures this paints in my mind, as if the building were a lumbering, mythical behemoth finally brought down by the teeming humans with ropes and picks. like an clipped, urban gullivers travels. thanks for this, a fine way to start reading in 2018

Thanks folks so much . This was haunting me initially because it was going to be about "question marks" and what they represented; which foxed me until I got a more solid image ie the coathangers. Hope that makes sense ?!

The old pulling up the door catches on british cars - even the AA used a plastic version ! I was happy with the first lines, but added an afterthought. Thanks David.

Thanks Kevin. I often bring inanimate things to life - just the kid in me.

Cheers Col. Always nice to get your max. attention - I know what you mean. I think the extra stanza opens it up for more depth - but it's a shame to take the liberty in a way.

Thank you Cynthia. Same as all above, as the point was worth making. Cleft stick time !

Happy New Year to youse all.

Thanks both for your comments.

I agree, we have the capacity, ingenuity and capability to look after and nurture our envrionment and the plethora of fellow Earth dwellers we share that with.

What frustrates me is that we don't.

So much could be done, and just isn't.

That doesn't take away from the amazing and vital work of so many of us get involved in and support.

I just worry that time will run out, and we'll be faced with a giant problem that it's too late to fix.

I do cross my fingers and hope, though!

An interesting viewpoint Fitzroy. You might also place the question on the discussion section. You may have more response perhaps.

I just fancied dropping a rather misshapen stone into the pond to see what the ripples might bring. Yours in the only ripple so far. And I thank you...There's a story that Burroughs once met Sam Beckett at an event in Paris. When Beckett was asked an opinion of him later, he said: 'Well, he's a writer.' Typically terse, the Thin Man. What he meant, of course, he never elaborated upon. The way Burroughs tells the story, he took it as a compliment. To actually be called a writer by Beckett he considered accolade enough. Well, you would, wouldn't you? But I guess my take is that a 'writer' will say and do pretty much anything, especially for effect....So what?

Excellent stuff JC. Just the job to raise a smile on this
particular New Year's Eve.
But to borrow from elsewhere -

"O the political needy/greedy is frightful
But the thought of sovereign Britain so delightful
Just sort out what we pay and what we owe,
Let us go, let us go, let us go!"
(apologies to Sammy Cahn and his song "Let It Snow")

A stimulating essay into the paradox of the beauty/harsh
cruelty of the natural world that surrounds us and upon
which we largely rely, and our own ingenuity that allows us
to survive as a species and which enables others to do likewise.
We have our failures but we are
the only life-form that actively & consciously involves itself
in the interests and protection of
others in the end game of existence, whatever its source.
We are given the intelligence to understand this and thus cannot
afford the ultimate failure of not acknowledging that awareness each and every day.

Intriguing, involving and, for me, containing corroboration
of an opinion occasionally bubbling to the surface of the
poetical stream. I know of William Burroughs and his
reputation but not much of his material. Funny how
unexpected viewpoints emerge to flavour the cauldron of conflicting creativity.

Seize the day! Those words still have proper resonance for
the lives we lead. By all means let us learn to live with
failure - for without that knowledge we would not have the
experience and hope to keep going onwards and upwards.
It is not lost on me that whenever danger and risk appear
on the horizon there is also a recognition and response to
accommodate them, not least with the hazards affecting
the natural world.
That's why I am, and will remain, an eternal optimist.
Nil desperandum!

Interesting bit of philosophy here Keith. Home is where the heart is - plus a bit of my own thrown in: that you can only be happy with others if you you're happy with yourself (my view ). The grass is greener on the other side.

Hi Keith
Wise words, obviously honed from life's journey.
I agree with you though, there are certain times when you know who is and isn't a friend; the qualities listed throughout this poem bringing home how special those kind of people are.

The One Left Behind

A new year
to all poets

Means perhaps changes
to writing paths

Different routes taken
lines to follow

When finishing off
this new challenge

It is not
always as good

As the one
we left behind.
