Graham - I agree, and I apologise for my comment which seems to have triggered this off. It was meant to be a throwaway line but I think it was interpreted wrongly.

I think it's about time the comments on this thread became little less personal and abusive. I for one am getting fed up with differing opinions turning into metaphorical pokes in the eye. Be different but be nice!

I know you alternated on the rhymes throughout, but you did a great job with how some of the alternate rhymes are near rhymes with the ones above and below them as well. Interesting read to say the least, and the second-to-last stanza really stood out and made me laugh (even if that wasn't the intention). Nice one!?

Thanks David. I have always been afflicted (or blessed)with a strange sense of reality. With the tangled skeins of nightmare realism confronting us it is a relief to throw a bit of insane logic into the mix IMO.

I can see how you fixed on that tune Martin. That's the power of lyrics! I think I also see a parallel with Old Man River, again the power of lyrics.

Thanks Brian for that. Yes, it's remarkable how often this kind of doggerel appeared in lyrics.

I'm ok thanks Suki. I think this should really be Doo lally.

Yes they were a bargaining chip in those days - a sort of meaningless gap filler.

This is getting interesting Graham - what have I started!
I think your example is one of the better ones of the genre.

I quite agree about that David. It brings light relief to more weighty considerations. Almost gravity defying !
Thanks.

My particular favourite is Blue Moon with that long introduction by the Platters. I can't quote it in full though....

Thanks for liking, Rachel Hannah and Anya.

Thanks everyone for enjoying the poem.

Yes I do agree with rehabilitation, but you can take a horse to water...

I also don't agree with reduced sentence for a guilty plea and reduced sentence for good behaviour. I think good behaviour should be the norm and that any bad behaviour should result in a longer sentence.

Going for rehabilitation is like going for world peace. You have to keep trying because the alternative is unthinkable.

When these leftie liberals come on the telly and tell us that prison doesn't work, I always ask back "for whom?" If a persistent criminal is taken out of circulation for a couple of years I'm all for it.

I'm not sure about the contradiction that asks how much then states "2 or 10 percent" being seen. I think this
could be revised accordingly...e.g.
I wonder of 100
How much of you I see
Is it 2 or 10 percent...
The same you see of me?
Sorry, that's the songwriter in me!!
But the premise is both inventive
and entertaining.

Suki - I go with Gary when he refers to "competes". In the
widest sense, all material vies (competes) for space, attention and even comment when placed in the public
arena, whether that be for online or other forms of publication. This is distinct from competing in the "prize"
sense of the word when subjective choice comes into play
to judge the estimated worth of material within the framework of a competition.

Good Morning Hasmukh,

I enjoyed this poem as it highlights the fact that a funeral is more for the living than the one who is departed. It is the final rite of passage and those who are left have confused feelings ranging from regret, remorse, one´own mortality and the need for some latent form of reconciliation.
Thank you for this
Keith

Hazel,
I can relate to this poem because it insists on my being honest. I have always endeavoured to be a calm and collected person, in no way aggressive and abhoring violence. These commendable attributes have altered significantly with the years. I don´t enjoy a good fight but I am now fully prepared to speak out and in the strongest terms and have a good shouting match to let people know that I am bloody furious and get my point across. What is there to lose when one has reached 70?

You have made me feel quite stroppy.
Well done and well said
Thanks
Keith

Interesting poem and subject matter Ian which I enjoyed reading. I was wondering how it might work with the last 4 verses interspersed between the first 4:
“what is beautiful?”...
Eliza weeps...
“why are they hurtful?”...
in that hour of hunger...
etc
as it stands it feels a bit like two one-sided conversations bolted together. Maybe you've done it this way for performance whereas I'm coming to it on the page so to speak - as a reader rather than a listener.
I was in a discussion here recently about explaining poetry. I think in this case the added picture and tags are a distraction - the words speak for themselves.
Hope you don't mind me chucking my musings at you Ian. All the very best, Colin.
