Christine, I used to live in Cloughton and walk up the old railway line to Ravenscar - great walk - and have a coffee in the hotel. Stunning place with, as you remind us, a sad history. What were those Victorians thinking? 7

Martin,
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment. I suppose, after many years, I have come to have no fear of the truth but to embrace and celebrate it. At the age of seventy, what more can they do to me?

A nice treat for you Hazel to ascend to the dizzy heights of POTW. It is as you say the reporting of an incident like this that compels attention. I think it's strength may be that in itself it does not cast judgment - which gives it extra impact, leaving us to do the analysing.

Well its probably a good thing its not a Haiku otherwise the title could be longer than the poem thus possibly making it a poem in its own right. Not sure I am making sense...…
any way good poem Damon

Hazel you have illuminated something quite poignant at the moment in this poem around homelessness and peoples reactions to each other in these situations and what might be expected.

Hello Hazel, I'm reading Roger McGough at the moment - isn't his writing wonderful, as in full of wonder? My old profile bio mentioned that I liked to explore those little moments in life that happen upon us without warning or something along those lines so it's good to see that echoed in this piece. Poetry for me is all about drilling down into the core of those moments and questioning why they happen in the context of our own lives. We don't always have the answers but as writers we attempt to gain some further insight through our words. Well done for being chosen for POTW. Col.

Hey Jon. I knew you'd eventually hear them ribbiting along the wire. Seems I have another avid follower.
Where are you Brian? Cycled into the canal? ribbit ribbit
Anya? Are you out there? ribbit ribbit
Ribbit ribbit everywhere
Not a pond to plonk
Ribbit ribbit everywhere
No place left to bonk
(apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

John,
A poem which encapsulates the cyclical nature of life so well. There is the temptation to deride the young as we ourselves grow older but we too were once like them. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said that a teacher of his ( a Dr Peabody ) belived that human progress was moving in a better and more productive direction, that inspite of war and tragedy we are heading along the right path slowly but surely. I hope that the young of today will realise their potential to create a world better than the one we bequeath to them.
Your poem stimulates the imagination and gives hope at a time when many despair of the younger generation.
Thank you for this,
Keith
