d.k and Pat,
Thank you for your comments. I spent sometime wondering whether to post this poem but in the end I just decided it was worth it because it was and is true.

Brian and Racha,
This would have been about the year 1963 when it was still a criminal offence. Compare this poem with the liberated gay scene in London and other places now.
Thank you both for your comments. I do really appreciate them.

Keith - I'll be honest, I'm way outside my comfort zone here but I support your bravery in descibing the graphic detail of what must have been a scary period for you. Big up. Brian

In some ways its an old story,
frequently we all stop from breaking free because of social restraints.
I like how you handle the story, you make it personal which makes me pay attention

Thanks for all your likes, Jon , Brian, Anya and Pat. After the little skirmishes which I enjoyed I feel some cats were let out of bags, the birds flying out of the cages simultaneously. I know everybody means well, but I think we should all take time to stand and listen to the National Anthem ! (is their an international one? bloody well should be - it saves time. Joyti, I agree it was a great poem (by the way).

Racha and Pat,
After having five children in yearly succession she devoted herself to them, the exclusion of all else. When they had flown the nest she was exhausted and caught in a loveless marriage. She deserved better but did not take the initiative in making a break. Convention and religion became her obstacles. So she lived a lie for the sake of appearances. Had she divorced her husband the world could have been her oyster as she was a bright and talented lady. But it was too late as she had been crushed and trapped. Thank you for your comments and interest in this poem

Brian And Anya,
The poem is about someone I know. Her incaceration is largely self inflicted although she would be reluctant to admit it. She had good reason to end her marriage but decided not to which was the biggest mistake. There is some justification in this as divorce in those days was counter cultural and brought with it shame and disgrace. Defeatism has now taken control and she no longer has the will to change.
Thank you both for your comments. As always they are much appreciated.

Keith - very powerful. Is it someone you know? There are a lot of people, men and women, trapped in their situation. Often it's a comfortable situation, but they nevertheless feeled trapped.

Like Keith this poem also appealed to me. I also echo what Keith is saying. " we belong to an important breed of people, fearless, outspoken and determined to put pen to paper when others retreat to their comfort zones".
If I can accuse you of anything it is writing damn good poetry. I personally verify my accusation.

The RSC 'n' me are both friends
I do a fill-in for them when they're lean
They love my g'day mate when put in my soliloquy
An Aussie-type Hamlet they 'aint seen
To be or not to be that is my question
I ask with my interspersed g'days
The audience scream out in encouragement
To be or to be (come what may)
It's you Brian who's started me off
You've exposed my true Bardian skill
I've come here well-trained in this area
Can't think of a last line...what a dill

Good Afternoon d.knape,
Thank you for this poem which really does appeal to me and is a reminder to many of the importance of this particular genre. It asks the question about the reason and purpose of poetry, especially in today´s world. Poets give a voice where no voice is heard. Poems speak of the unspeakable and do so with courage. We belong to an important breed of people, fearless, outspoken and determined to put pen to paper when others retreat to their comfort zones.
Thank you again for this excellent and well crafted contribution.

For poets who are BAME it's a catch 22: they aren't going to sell so they don't get published because they're not going to sell so they don't get published so they don't sell so they don't sell etc etc ad infinitum...
Schemes like this give a chance both for mentoring and publishing to people. Now I do have some reservations: I suspect the number of working-class writers among these NAMES poets is still pretty woeful.
Nevertheless, there are some interesting poets who've been helped to publication by this scheme, so you and read them.

This work has 'bite'. So many people do live with a helplessness of 'attraction', 'love', call it what you will, not really complete in themselves. Well expressed.
The last thought is very striking, a kind of self-prophecy. Not sure whether it's sinister, or cynical.

Racha,
May I ask what other languages you speak as you say that English is your third? I speak Spanish and German but English is my first. However, I would be hard pressed to write poetry in my other two languages.

Jayti (oops Joyti) - your lengthy and verbose comments suggests someone who enjoys listening to themselves.
BTW I noticed you're constant verbosing 'bout Ray's poem but no 'like' button response?.... At least Brian had the decency to do this...but then there's no print here for you to bask in hey?
" It seems the only purpose of your comment was to agitate, can you address that? It amazes me the things people don’t see." How rude!

A powerful and intimate piece of writing, full of sinister emotions that can overcome one or be resisted. A poem to read again and again. It articulates what so many suffer from in a world often given to despair.
One of the best poems I have read recently.
Thank you

Well I don't know, really. I was about to delete this, as I thought it is was just a waste of space. What was I thinking of! The positive ions in the atmosphere were getting to me, and I got carried away. Now it's rained, I feel more magnanimous. Nevertheless, I am much entertained by the sport of kings thus displayed in terms of ye olde comments, what!
Where were the grandees of the Palace - was the space rented out, or were they added to the line up of historical pageantry befitting to such a place? Should have released the hounds I reckon.
Thanks Joyti and Brian !

Hahaha, who said I wasn’t provoked Yojimbo? he had rudely tackled my son at the hors d'oeuvre for which I deemed he required punishment.
What world do you live in Mr Maryon? I don't go through life expecting people to be constantly nice to me, I don't get worried when people are abusive or unkind to me, I simply try my best to meet half way, if that doesn't work I destroy them with whit and/or sharp tongue, (where permitted, yawn!) that's life pal, that or a 7.62mm or 9mm or 5.56mm if you want to be exotic, or just turn away, which is actually the hardest thing evidently for me.
And what of Ray’s poem, have you no comment to make? You surely realise you may be breaking WoL guidelines, simply chatting for effect. It seems the only purpose of your comment was to agitate, can you address that? It amazes me the things people don’t see.
Demeaned! Lol, so funny. I made a constructive comment on it, unlike you Mr Maryon.
Oh sorry, great poem Ray. ???
Impact is so lost after the prompt, forgive me for livening up a rather dull July, look at the numbers folks.
Did I mention, great poem by the way Ray.
And should he have engaged me similarly I am sure I could have responded with conversation without the need of VAR.
I am advised it’s something referred to as freedom of speech, always cautious of those who resist it.
Oh great poem by the way Ray.
And exceptionally by the way, I’m on the side of the little people, those like me.
Just in case I didn’t mention, great poem Ray.
