Really liked this - the way you have built it up symmetrically. You can hear the yearning in it too. Great writing.

Forgive my flippancy
Why does it all spill out?
It even soaks in hallowed ground
What am I all about?
(Prep and softening in dk)
Walking in the woods
Skipping on hallowed ground
Trouble is I free my feet
They just go round and round
(I try to be serious but it just doesn't work...)

Mc you have taught me
This new word 'farrago'
A mish-mash, a jumble
(I still like a fuckup...)
But I'm from downunder
Where we are bred tough
With language to accompany
To ears British, sounds rough
Will try be more cultured
More Queen-like more proper
And yes, a farrago
UK comes a cropper ?

Hi stu, it was not my intention at all, but now you pointed it out it really does ring of LOTR and smeagol. Such an interesting character, fits the poem well I think. Thanks for your comments much appreciated. Thanks to Brian and Hart of lead for the likes.

Not at all sure that I follow your thread on this one, MC. No need to explain further, though. I'm sure you know best, and that there's nothing anyone can teach you about writing poetry. Thanks.

Certainly good news for all concerned in this enterprise. But the
essence is in the word "business" and it is the "business" of "business" to obtain support via custom for its "product". The
items I have been paid for and had published in commercial
magazines were chosen because they were suitable for that
magazine's paying customer base and not merely because
of any particular poetical profundity or attribute. Other poems
were accepted but not paid for in other media publications - as if
the situation was expected/justifiable Don't mention "business"!!
The commercial magazines had the edge, both in honesty and
business acumen. As for "teaching" poetry, I think I'll pass on that
one; Famed lyricist Sammy Cahn once wrote; "You can't teach
it" (lyric writing). Ergo, you learn as you go and possess the
basic values and attributes to help obtain success. No one ever
taught ME how to write poetry or song lyrics - and I have had
both commercially published.

Good poem MC. Will we ever leave? ...who knows, certainly not the aforementioned Man.

The years roll on and wisdom moves with them The fact that you
recall and regret should also be considered a double blessing for
being able to do both. Centuries ago, an author whose name I
almost forgot, wrote "Conscience doth make cowards of us all" -
and it merely shows that humanity retains the ability to think and
act upon such things with no time differential to affect that ability.
Maybe it's intended to help prevent us repeating the same mistakes.
Sadly, not always successfully.

Interesting! I've done my share of travelling in the past - including long distance walks - but there is much truth in the old saying:
home is where the heart is. Like Sinatra sings: "it's very nice to
go travelling but it's oh so nice to come home". ?

A beautiful poem, rich with keen insight. The struggle most writers face is in answering, "when is this done?" We always wish to improve but at some point we say, "good enough." Or perhaps that's just me.

I very much like the interpretations, David. There certainly is something to be said of the corruption of mankind as opposed to a vibrant, still living nature. In pursuing a way to show the properties of humans I have a tendency to focus on the shared mortality juxtaposed with immortality. I truly appreciate your comment.
And thank you very much, Ray. I suppose a little bit of morbid can have the same effect as delight. I enjoyed writing this one.

Wonderful this is, showing a deft handling of disparate scenes and responses. It is hard to get a delicate hold on the prosaic without letting sentimentality spoil things but this poet has achieved it; at least in my opinion. There is genuine sensitivity here. Thank you for posting a lovely poem.

You've got me all bamboozled
John, there is no Dawn
Within your poem to be shafted
Shafted once (on lawn?)
Your getting mixed up John you are
It's not the bush of may
It is the darling buds of may
And not the bush I say
Now what about this snatch of Ange
You grabbed the other day
While listening to your radio
For that I will you pay
It's good there's no commenters
Joined our interplay
They'd all be wondering what's gone wrong
Maybe I've scared them 'way ?
Sorry 'bout that...

This puts me in mind of Seamus Heaney's 'Digging'
But "give me a tool with which to shape and bend"
takes us right back to mans first invention, axes made from flint or antlers.
A poem to re-read and think about.
thank you
