The Forever Soldier

He could be from anywhere

And it is difficult to place him.

It could be London, Ohio, Berlin.

He could be from any era or any age,

For he is ageless and timeless.

He is noted for his youth and optimism

Because 'though he must march into the fields of fury,

He is basically good natured and cheerful.

He is wrapped around with the invincibility of being young,

Rooted in the now, in the moment.

There is no tomorrow,

There never is for him, not even in peacetime.

He is the budding jewel of the human crown,

The fragile lamb deformed by the musket

And to destroy him is unforgivable.

Yet ultimately he would want us to forgive.

LOL...Graham, I also had that fab song rattling around inside my head.

This poem is as masterful as are Donovans words.

Timeless, Hannah

That last line is the killer line for this piece in a great poem.
Nice one

Why did I find myself humming The Universal Soldier as I read through this a few times? Perfect last line!
