Slow return and quick departure

Despite its increased ruinous state, the detritus

how well we recognise and remember this shabby town

toddled these unhappy streets.

For no one in their right mind lives here now

the right-minded simply pass-through

stopover guests of some dire hotel

whose very short stays

were no doubt transfixed with total dissatisfaction.

Abandoned cars, many smashed windows

flurrying clouds of litter

boarded-up houses

all usurping respectability.

Thank god! thank god!

that for us our real home was waiting, elsewhere

and not poverty haunted

like this archaic worn out location.

Only good fortune and the duality of common sense

has seen us through.

We must shun such memories of this forsaken place

while not forgetting to pity the little ghosts

we used to be.

P & S - I love this piece as a reflection on today's society and the declining standards of town centres across the land. It particularly resonates with me as the two towns I was spawned and grew up in are exactly as described. The last time I revisited them was desperate and depressing. You manage to capture those sentiments very concisely - nice work guys!

Though fictional Rose ( have edited ) this still relates to the consequences of lacking or poor investment in businesses and the people who could, given the chance, go with them.

Our thank's to you and also to Adam-Devon-Lisa.
