Flashbacks

In their unavoidable memories,

horrific reminders,

keep repeating keep returning

to page one in the minds of old soldiers.

Cruelty again sending them all

down the same old paths

to be wearily, sadly, trod once more

leading to long ago madnesses and chaos

where brotherly ghosts linger

trying to smile with torn faces

trying to wave without hands

yet remaining as hauntingly close as ever

they, who themselves were once living victims

fresh cattle for the abattoirs of conflict

marching the bomb-cratered roads

to shake hands with their doom

they whose names would soon be known by death

carved onto so many, hurriedly made makeshift wooden crosses

sprouting up here and there on shell ransacked battlefields

and on far too many but necessary monuments and aligned headstones

those who were once brothers in arms

whose names will always remain forever etched

on the grateful minds of those

they sacrificed their lives for.

I would not like to have in my mind, Patricia and Stefan what is in the minds of people who have been through the horrors of war. A very moving piece of remembering these heroic men AND women. Thank you. Jemima.
